SOUTH
BURLINGTON, Vt. - Senior Desiree Biron (Bow, N.H.) tied a
program record with four goals Saturday afternoon as the Saint
Michael's College women's ice hockey team earned its first victory
of the season, 10-0, over Plymouth State University in ECAC East
conference action at Cairns Arena.
Biron, who
scored twice in the both the first and second periods, tied the
program record held by Meg Lyons '05, who netted four goals in a
win at Castleton State College on November 19, 2004.
The 10-goal margin of victory matched the largest in program
history, and it marked Saint Michael's highest scoring output since
a 10-0 win versus Plymouth on February 22, 2008.
Senior Crystal
Sarno (Stoneham, Mass.) also scored twice for the Purple Knights,
her third and fourth goals in the last two days, as did freshman
Allison Graf (Long Lake, Minn.), the first two goals of her
collegiate career. Sophomore Kelly McDonald (South Burlington, Vt.)
and freshman Laura Levin (Hingham, Mass.) also scored their first
collegiate goals in the win, while Graf and McDonald added an
assist apiece. Junior Alysia Goldman (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) turned
aside 12 shots to pick up the shutout, the second of her career.
Sophomore
Nicole Provencher (Guilford, Conn.) recorded 18
saves on 24 shots through two periods for the Panthers, while
freshman Melissa Bourgoin (Lewiston, Maine)
stopped seven of 11 third-period shots in her collegiate debut.
Biron opened
the scoring for Saint Michael's with two even-strength goals in the
first 10 minutes of the contest. After Sarno's first goal four
minutes into the second period increased the Purple Knights' lead
to 3-0, Saint Michael's broke open the contest with three goals in
the final seven minutes of the frame. Biron scored a pair of
unassisted goals just 13 seconds apart to give the hosts a 5-0
lead, and Sarno's second goal of the game - also unassisted - three
minutes later made the score 6-0 through 40 minutes.
Graf and
McDonald tallied early in the third frame to increase the lead to
8-0, and Graf and Levin netted goals late in the period to complete
the scoring.
Saint Michael's
(1-3-0, 1-3-0 ECAC East) returns to action on Friday, as the Purple
Knights host conference-rival Nichols College at 7 p.m. Plymouth
(0-3-0, 0-3-0 ECAC East) will seek its first win of the season on
Tuesday, as the Panthers host league-foe New England College at
6:00 p.m. at Waterville Valley.
