WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. - Castleton State College scored
three goals in the third period Saturday afternoon to pull out a
5-3 victory over Plymouth State University in an ECAC Women's East
ice hockey game at Waterville Valley Arena.
Junior Laura
Szwed (White Lake, Mich.) led the Spartans with two goals and an
assist, including a goal and an assist in the pivotal third
period. Castleton finishes the weekend 2-0 after Friday
night's win at the University of Southern Maine and evens its
season mark at 2-2, while PSU came up empty on the weekend and
drops to 0-2 on the season.
Szwed scored
the only goal of the first period for Castleton on a breakaway just
1:39 into the contest. It stayed 1-0 until PSU sophomore
Danielle Shea (Billerica, Mass.) evened the score
with her first goal of the season 4:36 into the second period.
Castleton
regained the lead at the 11-minute mark of the second period on a
power play goal by freshman Abbey Hewes (Salt Lake City, Utah), but
the Panthers answered with a power play goal of their own by
sophomore Tina Worley (Anchorage, Alaska) at
17:39, sending the game to the third period tied at 2-2.
Neither team
could break the tie in the third period until Szwed tallied her
second of the game for Castleton on the power play with 8:18 to
play, and junior Kate Gray (Northfield, Vt.) made it a two-goal
Spartan advantage with her first goal with 5:41 remaining.
PSU kept
battling and sophomore Jaimie
Camara (Portsmouth, R.I.) scored for the second
straight game to pull the Panthers to within a goal with four
minutes left, but junior Amy Costa (Bristol, R.I.) sealed the win
for Salve with a power play goal in the final minute of play.
Plymouth State
had a 6-4 advantage in shots in the first period, but Castleton had
a 36-14 advantage over the final two periods, including 21-5 in the
third frame, for a 40-20 margin for the game.
Castleton
freshman Katharyn Dembowski (Elkridge, Md.) made 17 saves in goal
to improve her record to 2-1. PSU sophomore Nicole
Provencher (Guilford, Conn.) finished with 35 saves.
PSU makes its
first road trip of the season next Saturday with a visit to Saint
Michael's College for a 3:00 p.m. face-off. After opening the
season with four road games, Castleton plays its next seven
contests at home, beginning next Friday and Saturday against New
England College and Saint Anselm College, respectively.
