WORCESTER, Mass. - Junior goalie Monique Gallant
(Antigonish, Nova Scotia) earned her fourth shutout of the season
Tuesday evening as the Holy Cross women's hockey team defeated
Plymouth State University, 8-0, in an ECAC Women's East Conference
match-up at the Hart Center.
The
conference-leading Crusaders remained undefeated on the season at
9-0-1 overall (7-0-1 ECAC), while the Panthers fall to 0-7-0 (0-7-0
ECAC) on the season. It was a scoreless game until midway
through the second period and Holy Cross led only 2-0 after
two periods.
The first
period was played to a draw as neither team was able to find the
back of the net. Holy Cross outshot the Panthers 11-3, while no one
was able to take advantage of the power play opportunity.
Holy Cross'
offense finally broke through at the 11:20 mark of the second
period when junior Jocelyn Kratchmer (Watrous, Sask.) scored on a
pass from sophomore Stacey Hochkins (New Boston, Mich.) and junior
Emily Henry (Lumsden,Sask.). Seven minutes later, at the 18:29
mark, senior Kathryn Kelley (Dedham, Mass.) recovered a loose puck
in front of the net and scored her first goal of the year to give
Holy Cross a 2-0 lead.
The Crusaders
exploded for six goals in the third period with Hochkins finding
the back of the net on three of them. Kratchmer added her second
goal of the night and senior Wendy Nobrega (Barrington, R.I.) and
sophomore Nicola Garat (Princeton, N.J.) each scored for the
Crusaders.
Gallant stopped
seven Plymouth State shots on the way to her fourth shutout of the
year and fifth win. Plymouth State goalie Nicole
Provencher (Guilford, Conn.) made 44 saves. Holy Cross
outshot Plymouth State 52-7 and went 0-2 on the power play while
Plymouth State went 0-3.
PSU wraps up
the semester Friday with a conference game at Salve Regina (9:00
p.m.) Holy Cross will return to the ice on Tuesday, Jan. 8
when it hosts Colby at the Hart Center at 7:00 p.m.
