PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Sophomore
pitcher Amanda Berard (Swansea, Mass.) picked up a win and a save
Saturday afternoon as Rhode Island College swept a softball
doubleheader from Little East Conference foe Plymouth State
University at the Dayna A. Bazar Softball Complex.
RIC, which had its 19-game unbeaten streak halted with a loss to
Westfield State on Thursday, raises its overall record to 28-3-1
and stays undefeated with a 7-0-1 mark in the LEC. The Panthers see
their marks drop to 16-11 and 4-6, respectively.
Rhode Island College took a close game one, 5-3. The hosts put up
four runs in the second inning as two runs scored on a Plymouth
State throwing error. RIC freshman Cristina Bailey (Londonderry,
N.H.) slid home under PSU catcher Kortney
Nedeau¹s (Kennebunk, Maine) tag and sophomore Amanda
Perry (New Bedford, Mass.) doubled in senior Kelli McCartin
(Cranston, R.I.) to close out the frame¹s offense.
The Panthers came back with three runs in the fourth, chasing RIC
junior starting pitcher Jenna Deveines (Lowville, N.Y.) from the
game. Nedeau doubled to left and sophomore Andrea
Pydynkowski (Danvers, Mass.) hit a bloop to put two
aboard. Freshman Jen Skilton (Bedford, N.H.)
singled sharply to left and an outfielder error plated two runs.
Junior Kay Labrie (Somersworth, N.H.) singled in
another to pull PSU within one run, 4-3. Berard came on in relief
to get the Anchorwomen out of the inning without any further
damage.
Junior Michelle Perrin (Saugus, Mass.) led off the RIC fifth with a
triple and later scored on sophomore Laura Kostenblatt¹s
(Keene, N.H.) RBI single.
Berard earned the win (9-1), hurling 3.1 innings of scoreless
relief. She allowed just one hit and struck out four. Senior
Courtney MacFarland (Hampstead, N.H.) suffered the
loss (8-6) for PSU.
The Anchorwomen slammed the door on the PSU offense in game two,
earning a 8-0 shutout victory. It is the 10th time this spring that
the Anchorwomen have kept their opponent off the scoreboard.
Sophomore Donielle Mattoon (Coventry, R.I.) tripled and later
scored on an error, helping RIC to take a 1-0 lead in the third.
Perrin and sophomore Kayla Jandreau (Plainville, Conn.) added
back-to-back RBI singles in the fifth.
Sophomore Chelsi Panarelli (Shrewsbury, Mass.) doubled in the sixth
and later scored on sophomore Laura DeNoncour¹s (Johnston,
R.I.) pinch-hit single. Freshman Danielle Gorneault (Berlin, Conn.)
and Mattoon followed with back-to-back RBI doubles. Jandreau
knocked in one with a single and Kostenblatt ended the game early
with a run-scoring single.
Sophomore starter Melanie Neece (Westfield, Mass.) earned the win
(8-2), allowing just four hits in five innings, before giving way
to Berard who picked up her LEC-leading eighth save of the year.
PSU junior Jenna George (Cumberland, R.I.) took
the loss (6-4).
Both teams return to action Tuesday with LEC twinbills, PSU
returning home to host Southern Maine and RIC visiting Western
Connecticut.
