MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - Wesleyan University opened up a 2-0
lead in the first period Tuesday night and never trailed the rest
of the contest in coming away with a 5-2 victory over Plymouth
State University in non-conference women's ice hockey action.
Wesleyan had
five different goal scorers in the contest while two other players
picked up a pair of assists each. The hosts had a 61-20 edge in
shots on goal while improving to 2-9 overall; PSU fell to 0-12.
Freshman
Montanna Heinlein (St. Albans, Vt.) recorded a
goal and an assist for her first points of the season for the
Panthers. Sophomore Abby Van Wormer (Marstons
Mills, Mass.) scored PSU's first goal for her first of the season,
and classmate Brianna Davis (Framingham, Mass.)
assisted on both Panther goals.
Trailing 2-0
after one period, Van Wormer put the Panthers on the board with a
power play goal just 1:27 into the middle frame. The
Cardinals got their two-goal lead back three minutes later, but
Heinlein cut the margin back to one with a 5-on-3 goal at the 8:02
mark, making the score 3-2.
Wesleyan
notched a goal late in the second period to regain the two-goal
advantage and added a third-period marker for insurance.
Sophomore
Nicole Provencher (Guilford, Conn.) made 56 saves
in the Panther goal. Freshman Ashleigh Corvi turned aside 18
scoring bids to post her first win of the season for the home team.
Wesleyan will
host NESCAC rival Trinity College in its next start on Friday.
Plymouth St. will visit ECAC East foe Southern Maine the same
day for its next game.
