NORTH CONWAY, N.H. - The Plymouth State University men's
ski team took top honors in the slalom race Saturday at the
University of Connecticut Carnival at Cranmore Mountain, the second
team victory of the season for the Panthers and fourth straight
top-two finish. The Panther women also continued their strong
season, finishing runner-up for the third straight race.
PSU edged Colby-Sawyer College to capture the men's race, with
Boston College, the University of Massachusetts and Babson College
taking up the next three slots in the nine-team field. Brown
University, the MacConnell Division leader which had stumbled to a
sixth-place finish Friday, rebounded to capture the women's race,
while PSU finished second and Colby-Sawyer, BC and UMass rounded
out the top five.
Freshman Martina Ryberg (Sweden) continued her
terrific rookie season Saturday, taking first place (out of 66
skiers) for the third time in four races. Senior Alyssa
Deane (Casper, Wyoming) posted a strong
12th-place finish, and three other Panthers placed in
the top 25 as freshman Hilary Lemelin (Milan,
N.H./Berlin/Gould Academy) was 19th and senior
Alex Albrecht (Canterbury, N.H./Carrabasset
Valley) and sophomore Katherine Goller (Williston,
Vt.) were 22nd and 23rd, respectively.
Juniors Peter Ostroski (Intervale, N.H./Kennett)
and Travis Nevins (Henniker, N.H./John Stark) led
the Panther men, finishing in second and third place in the field
of 74 skiers. Freshman Parker Spear (Sodus
Point, N.Y./Sodus Central) placed ninth; his third top-10 finish of
the season, and senior Chris Carlucci (Mahopac,
N.Y.) was close behind in 11th. Other top 20
finishers for PSU included juniors Tyler Bailey
(West Hurley, N.Y.) and Austin Nevins (Henniker,
N.H./John Stark) in 15th and 16th,
respectively.
The Panthers will serve as hosts of the Plymouth State Carnival
next weekend at Waterville Valley, with the slalom on Saturday and
the giant slalom on Sunday.
