WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. - Sophomore Mandy Manopla (West
Palm Beach, Fla..) recorded two goals and one assist and junior
Christine Rigosi (Ridgewood, N.Y.) stopped all 29 shots she faced
Friday night as Nichols College defeated Plymouth State University,
9-0, in an ECAC Women's East ice hockey game at Waterville Valley
Arena.
Nichols took
control of the game in the first period with three unanswered
goals. The Bison put the game away in the middle of the
second period with three goals in a 90-second span, turning a 4-0
game into a runaway. The Panthers registered a season-high 29
shots on goal but Rigosi held the fort and earned her first win of
the season and her first career shutout.
Junior Ashley
O'Donnell (North Scituate, R.I.) and sophomore Cheryl Pitts
(Wakefield, Mass.) each scored their first goal of the season to
give Nichols a 2-0 lead, and Manopla potted her first of two to
give the Bison a 3-0 advantage after one. Sophomore Hannah
Tardif (Laconia, N.H.) made it 4-0 early in the second period, and
Candace Ellis (Gloucester, Mass.), junior SueEllen Nault
(Goffstown, N.H.) and Manopla rattled off three in a row in the
middle of the second period to finish off the Panthers.
PSU junior
goalie Lauren Bonanni (Ridgefield, Conn.) stopped
nine of the 10 shots she faced after coming in late in the second
period in place of sophomore Nicole Provencher
(Guilford, Conn.)
Both teams play
again on Saturday, PSU hosting UMass Boston at 2:00 p.m. at
Waterville Valley and Nichols visiting the University of Southern
Maine for a 1:00 p.m. face-off.
