SUNAPEE, N.H. - Plymouth State University's alpine ski
racing teams each had two top-10 placers Saturday afternoon in the
giant slalom as the Panther men's and women's squad both finished
runner-up at the Colby-Sawyer Winter Carnival at Mount Sunapee.
The Panther men, who won the GS team standings on Friday, placed
second on Saturday with two finishers in the top 10 and two more in
the top 15 among the 70 racers. Host Colby-Sawyer won the
men's team title, with PSU second, Boston College third, Babson
College fourth and Saint Anselm College fifth.
The PSU women, who jumped from sixth place in Friday's GS race to
second in Saturday's event, had just two top 10 finishers.
Brown University captured the women's team standings among 10
teams, with PSU second, Boston College third, Colby-Sawyer at
fourth and the University of Massachusetts Amherst fifth.
Freshman Martina Ryberg (Sweden) was the top
Panther finisher, placing third among 70 skiers in the women's race
after winning the event on Friday. Senior Alyssa
Deane (Casper, Wyoming) was close behind in sixth place
overall. Senior Alex Albrecht (Canterbury,
N.H./Carrabasset Valley) and sophomore Katherine
Goller (Williston, Vt.) were the next Panther finishers in
27th and 28th, respectively.
Junior Peter Ostroski (Intervale, N.H./Kennett)
and freshman Parker Spear (Sodus Point, N.Y./Sodus
Central) finished seventh and eighth to pace the Panther men. Both
were also top 10 placers on Friday. Three Panther juniors
were also in the top 20 Saturday, with Willie Colt
(Hanover, N.H.) in 13th and Travis Nevins
(Henniker, N.H./John Stark) and Austin Nevins
(Henniker, N.H./John Stark) in 14th and 17th, respectively.
PSU freshman Chris Beadon (Ridgefield, Conn.), who
won Friday's men's GS, was in the lead after one run on Saturday
but stumbled in the second run and ended up 46th.
The Panther teams will be back in action next weekend (Jan. 15-16)
with slalom races Friday and Saturday at Cranmore Mountain in
Conway, N.H.
