Box Score Panthers hold on for first point of season
CASTLETON, Vt. – The Plymouth State University
women's hockey team picked up its first point of the season
Friday night, skating to a 2-2 tie with Castleton State College in
ECAC East women's ice hockey action at Spartan Arena.
PSU junior Bri Davis (Framingham, Mass.) scored
with 10 minutes to go in the third period to give the Panthers a
2-1 lead, but Castleton answered with a power play goal a minute
later to tie the score at 2-2, and that's the way it
stayed. Both teams killed off power play attempts in the
final four minutes of regulation, and Castleton withstood another
minor penalty in the overtime session.
The Spartans got on the scoreboard first as freshman Stephanie
Bardell (Erwina, Pa.) beat the goalie glove side at 3:42 of the
first period for an early advantage. Plymouth State answered back
at 8:36 as freshman Meghan Cassidy (Somerville,
N.J.) put home a loose puck in front of the net to tie the score at
1-1.
After a scoreless second period, Davis put the Panthers ahead 2-1
at 9:49 with a wrist shot from the slot that slipped through the
goalie into the back of the net. One minute and 10 seconds later,
the Spartans evened the scored at 2-2 as sophomore Hanna Martini
(Fayston, Vermont) drove home a slapshot from the point.
Panthers' goalie Ali Ponte (Richmond, Hill,
Ont.) kept the score at 2-2, robbing Castleton forward Jade Werger
(Maple Ridge, B.C.) on a breakaway chance with 3:45 remaining in
regulation.
Plymouth State outshot the Spartans 4-0 in overtime but Castleton
netminder Katharyn Dembowski (Elkridge, Md.) made all four stops to
preserve the tie. Dembowski finished the night with 26 saves while
Ponte turned away 28 shots on net.
PSU, 0-3-1 overall, travels to New England College on Saturday for
another ECAC East Conference game (1:00 p.m.) Castleton,
2-2-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the ECAC East, is home again Saturday in
an ECAC East contest against Southern Maine at 3:00 p.m.
