GORHAM, Maine – Junior Katie Paradis (Rochester,
N.H.) scored a goal and dished out two assists Saturday afternoon
as the University of Southern Maine Huskies women's ice hockey team
opened the 2010-11 season by defeating the Plymouth State
University Panthers, 5-2, in an ECAC (Eastern College Athletic
Conference) Women's East game at the USM Ice Arena.
Paradis scored what proved to be the game-winning goal late in the
first period while the Huskies enjoyed the power play.
Paradis buried a 20-foot shot from the slot area after receiving a
pass from the left wing boards by freshman Shannon Cronin
(Wakefield, Mass.). Junior Lauren Whiting (Hampton, N.H.)
also picked up an assist.
Southern Maine jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening four
minutes. Freshman Courtney White (Medford, Mass.) netted a
power-play tally 52 seconds into the contest to put the hosts
ahead. Sophomore Kailey Bubier (Auburn, Maine) converted a
pass from Paradis to make it 2-0 at 3:54.
Freshman Jane Baruch (Coventry, R.I.) put the
Panthers on the board at 12:30 when her pass from behind the net
deflected off a USM defender and into the net for a power-play
goal. USM had an 18-4 advantage in shots on goal in the
opening 20 minutes.
Senior Mary Vaughan (Brunswick, Maine) scored an unassisted goal at
2:59 of the middle period to increase the margin to 4-1.
Rookie Allison Collins (Murrieta, Calif.) got one
back for the Panthers at 9:26, set up by junior Bri
Davis (Framingham, Mass.) and freshman Rebecca
Fogg (White River Jct., Vt.). Whiting potted the
final goal of the game, a power-play marker, at 13:58 of the second
period off assists from Paradis and Cronin.
Southern Maine finished the game with a 42-19 edge in shots on
goal. Plymouth State freshman goalie Ali
Ponte (Richmond Hills, Ont.) made 37 saves while USM
rookie goaltender Jordan Lee (Colorado Springs, Colo.) stopped 17
shots.
The Huskies return to the ice on Friday (Nov. 12) hosting Saint
Michael's College. The Panthers will play their home opener
in new Hanaway Rink next Friday hosting defending league champion
Norwich University.
