MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Saint Anselm women's ice hockey
team knocked off the Plymouth State University Panthers Saturday
afternoon, 10-1, in an ECAC East Conference game at Sullivan Arena.
The Hawks were
led by Rosemarie Giarrusso (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.), Kathryn
Picarello (West Roxbury, Mass.) and Kristen Byrne (Duxbury, Mass.),
who each scored two goals in the game. The win lifts the
Hawks to 12-8-1 (10-4-1 ECAC East), while the Panthers sink to 0-20
(0-15 ECAC East).
The Hawks came
out of the gate quickly, netting three goals in the first six
minutes of the game. Giarrusso flipped in the first goal off
a pass from Jamie Lynn Comrie (Ashburn, Virg.) at 1:59 in the first
period. Picarello knocked in the second goal at 4:22, and
Katilin O'Brien (South Boston, Mass.) shoved in a third goal at
5:20. Byrne converted a rebound on a Hawk power play to put the
Hawks up 4-0 and Giarrusso scored her second goal of the game on a
breakaway drive to give the Hawks a five-goal lead heading into the
second period.
PSU sophomore
Michelle Leonard (Hopkinton, Mass.) scored her
first career goal midway through the third period, assisted by
freshmen Jenn Bove (Medford, Mass.) and
Jackie Collins (Dedham, Mass.) to put the Panthers
on the board. But that was all the offense PSU could muster.
Both teams are
on the road for conference games next Friday, Feb. 12th, Saint
Anselm visiting Manhattanville College and PSU traveling to UMass
Boston.
