NEWRY, Maine - Freshman Martina Ryberg
(Stockholm, Sweden) put a cap on her sensational rookie season
Friday afternoon, finishing runner-up in the slalom race to earn
First Team All-American honors at the United States Collegiate Ski
and Snowboard Association (USCSA) National Championships at Sunday
River Resort.
Ryberg's strong performance helped the Panthers to a sixth place
finish among the 21 schools in contention for the national
title. Westminster College (Utah) captured the team
championship, with Sierra Nevada College second, Boston College
third, Brown University fourth, and Colby-Sawyer College fifth,
just ahead of Plymouth State.
Ryberg (right), who was also First Team All-America two
days ago with a third place in the giant slalom, was in fifth place
out of the 115 racers after one run of Friday's slalom. The
Panther freshman then recorded the fastest time on the course in
the second run to finish in second place overall. She was
just 17 one-hundredths of a second behind champion Kendall Brown of
Westminster College. Ryberg's outstanding rookie season
included four victories in 10 regular season races and first place
finishes in the slalom, giant slalom and combined alpine last month
at the Eastern Regional championships.
Sophomore Kait Pawlak (No. Windham, Vt.) was PSU's
next finisher, coming in 24th place, while and
Alex Albrecht (Canterbury, N.H.) tied for
35th place. Sophomore Katherine
Goller (Williston, Vt.) finished in 44th, while
senior Alyssa Deane (Casper, Wyoming) was in
27th after one run but fell on her second run and ended
up 55th.
The USCSA national championships conclude on Saturday with the
men's slalom.
