PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Junior Kortney
Nedeau (Kennebunk, Maine) went 5-for-6 with a double,
three home runs and eight runs batted in Thursday afternoon to lead
Plymouth State University to a doubleheader sweep of Fitchburg
State College, 10-3 and 7-4, in PSU's softball home opener at
D&M Park.
Nedeau (right) was 4-for-4 with a double, two home
runs and six RBI as PSU won the opener. She hit a two-run
single in the first inning, a solo homer to lead off the third, a
run-scoring double in the fifth and a two-run homer in the
sixth. Nedeau followed with a two-run jack in the first
inning of the nightcap, giving her three round-trippers on the day
and six on the season.
Nedeau's performance in the opener made a winner out of
sophomore Ali Keith (Northfield, N.H./Winnisquam),
who tossed a complete-game and allowed seven hits and a walk and no
earned runs, evening her record at 4-4. PSU also got two hits
apiece from sophomore Heather Blase (Milford,
N.H.) and senior Kay LaBrie (Somersworth, N.H.)
Sophomore Kelly Cummings (Natick, Mass.) led the visitors with a
two-run home run in the first inning, while senior Leigh Trzcinski
(Worcester, Mass.) had a pair of hits, including a double.
Sophomore Allie Luisi (North Kingstown, R.I.)
cracked her first home run of the season to put PSU on the board in
the nightcap, and Nedeau added a two-run shot to give PSU a 3-0
lead. Junior Andrea Pydynkowski (Danvers,
Mass.), who was 3-for-3 in the game, contributed an RBI double in
the third inning. PSU added three insurance runs in the sixth
inning, senior Sammi Romano (Kingston,
N.H./Sanborn Regional) bringing home a run on an infield grounder,
sophomore Amy Green (Atkinson, N.H./Timberlane
Regional) knocking in a run with a single, and Luisi finishing off
the scoring with a bases-loaded walk.
Freshman Diana Bean (Danvers, Mass.) went the
distance to pick up the win (4-4) for PSU, allowing 10 hits and two
earned runs while striking out two.
Junior Nicole Monroe (Townsend, Mass.) had a busy game for the
Falcons, pitching six innings and adding two hits in three trips to
the plate, including an RBI single to put Fitchburg on the board in
the fourth inning. Trzcinski, Cummings and sophomore Ashley
McKinnon (Raynham, Mass.) also had two hits each for the visitors.
Both teams are back in action with conference doubleheaders on
Saturday, weather permitting, a PSU is scheduled to travel to
Western Connecticut State University for a Little East Conference
pair (1:00 p.m.) while FSC hosts MCLA in a MASCAC twinbill at 12
noon.
