PLYMOUTH, N.H. – It was Senior Day at
Panther Field but sophomore Teddy Akriviellis
(Dover, Mass.) provided the highlights with career-highs with five
goals and seven points Saturday afternoon as Plymouth State
University powered past the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth,
15-4, in a key Little East Conference men's lacrosse game.
The Panthers also got three goals and an assist from senior
Brian Giroux (Wolfeboro Falls, N.H.) and two goals
and three assists from junior Andrew Eriksen
(Beverly, Mass.). Senior Brett Zebrowski
(Bayville, N.Y.) added a pair of goals as PSU won its fourth game
in a row to even its overall mark at 6-6. Plymouth State is
now tied for third in the LEC with Salem State and Western
Connecticut, all with 3-2 conference records.
Junior Stephen Espinola (Groton, Mass.) tallied three of the four
UMD goals but the Corsairs dropped their second straight to fall to
6-8 overall and 2-3 in LEC play.
PSU also got strong games from junior goalie Kevin
Hayes (Beverly, Mass.) and senior middie Steve
Engel (South Windsor, Conn.). Hayes made 14 saves
before coming out of the came with five minutes remaining and Engel
won 13-of-17 face-offs and picked up a team-high nine ground balls.
The Corsairs actually jumped out to a 2-0 lead as Espinola scored
twice in the first four minutes of the game. Akriviellis
evened the score with two goals over the next eight minutes for
PSU, and Eriksen followed with a pair to put the Panthers ahead
after one period, 4-2.
Zebrowski and Giroux opened the second period scoring for PSU
before Espinola answered with his third of the game and
19th of the season, but Akriviellis scored two more
goals before halftime to give the home team an 8-3 advantage at the
break.
Junior Josh Arsenault (Revere, Mass.) scored the first goal of the
second half for UMD, but that ended up as the last goal for the
Corsairs. PSU pulled away with five unanswered goal in the third
period and the only two of the final stanza.
Plymouth State finished with a 51-33 advantage in shots, and a
49-35 margin in ground balls. The Panthers also won 14 of the
22 face-offs.
Both teams play important LEC games again on Tuesday, Plymouth
State visiting rival Keene State and UMD traveling to Salem State.
