PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Junior Amanda Berard
(Swansea, Mass.) tossed a five-inning perfect game and classmate
Chelsi Panarelli (Shrewsbury, Mass.) went 7-for-8 with two home
runs and six RBI Saturday afternoon as Rhode Island College swept a
Little East Conference softball doubleheader from Plymouth State
University, 12-0 and 10-2, at D&M Park.
Berard retired all 15 batters she faced for RIC in the opener,
striking out three and improving her record to 8-3. Senior
pitcher Jenna Deveines (Lowville, N.Y.) remained undefeated (9-0)
for RIC with a complete-game effort in the nightcap, allowing just
one earned run in five innings. The doubleheader sweep gives
the Anchorwomen seven straight wins and a 22-5 overall record (6-2
in the LEC), while PSU drops to 11-16 overall and 3-5 in the Little
East.
Panarelli hit a three-run homer in the first inning of the opener
and the Anchorwomen never looked back. Junior Donielle
Mattoon (Coventry, R.I.) and Panarelli hit back-to-back home runs
in the second inning to highlight a five-run Anchorwomen
rally. Panarelli finished with three hits and four RBI, while
junior Kayla Jandreau (Plainville, Conn.) also had three hits and
Mattoon drove in three.
The Anchorwomen scored in all five innings of the nightcap,
finishing with 10 runs and 17 hits. Panarelli and sophomore
Cristina Bailey (Londonderry, N.H.) each collected four hits and
knocked in two runs, and Jandreau added her second straight
three-hit game. Senior Jackie Dube (Barrington, N.H.) also
had a pair of doubles and three RBI.
Senior Kay LaBrie (Somersworth, N.H.) and
sophomore Allie Luisi (North Kingstown, R.I.) hit
back-to-back doubles in the first inning to provide a Panther
highlight. Junior Kortney Nedeau (Kennebunk,
Maine) added an RBI double in the third inning.
RIC returns home to host UMass Boston in an LEC doubleheader on
Sunday at 4:00 p.m.. PSU's make-up LEC twinbill Sunday
at Western Connecticut has been postponed again and rescheduled for
Sunday, May 2. The Panthers play next Tuesday at Southern
Maine (3:30 p.m.)
