GORHAM, Maine – Freshman Katie Davis
(Woburn, Mass.) and junior Heather Gilman (Fairfield, Maine)
combined for nine hits, 10 runs batted in, and five runs scored
Thursday afternoon to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies
to a sweep of the Plymouth State University Panthers in a Little
East Conference softball doubleheader at Towers Field.
USM won the first game 8-2, and then slugged out 14 hits for a 12-7
win in the nightcap. Southern Maine pulls even in the LEC at
6-6 and moves to 10-26 overall. The losses drop the Panthers
to 11-18 overall and 3-7 in the Little East.
The teams traded runs in the first inning of the opener, junior
Kortney Nedeau (Kennebunk, Maine) doubling home a
run for PSU and Davis doing the same for USM. Gilman doubled to
lead off the Southern Maine second inning and scored on an infield
error to give the Huskies a 2-1 lead.
PSU battled back to tie the game in the top of the fifth when
senior Kay LaBrie (Somersworth, N.H.) led off the
inning with a double to center field, stole third and came around
to score on a wild pitch. But the Huskies broke open the game
with five runs in the home half of the inning. Hayden had a key
two-run single for USM and Gilman followed with a two-run home run,
her third of the season.
Trailing USM 5-2 after three innings of the nightcap, Plymouth
State rallied to tie the game with three runs in the fourth inning
on an RBI double from LaBrie and a two-run single from sophomore
Heather Blase (Milford, N.H.). However, USM
bounced back with three runs in the bottom of the inning keyed by
Davis' two-run homer and Gilman's RBI single to
left.
Southern Maine added four more runs in the bottom of the fifth to
pull ahead 12-5. DiCecco drove in three of the Huskies four
runs in the fifth inning with a bases clearing double to left
center.
Southern Maine returns to action on Saturday (12:00 p.m.) at Keene
State College for a Little East doubleheader. Plymouth State
returns home to host UMass Boston Saturday on Senior Day at D&M
Park (12:00 p.m.) in a pair of LEC games.
