Box Score Baruch scores lone goal for Panthers
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Sophomore goaltender Nicole Bonneau
(Williston, Vt.) made 20 saves Tuesday evening as Wesleyan
University defeated Plymouth State University, 5-1, in a
non-conference women's hockey game at Hanaway Rink.
The Cardinals got goals from five different players, including a
goal and an assist from junior Jill Reynolds (Medina, Minn.).
Wesleyan won for the second time in its last three outings,
improving to 2-6-0 overall. Freshman Jane Baruch
(Coventry, R.I.) tallied the only goal for PSU as the Panthers
dropped to 0-10-1 overall.
Wesleyan scored the only goal of the first period at 11:50 when
Reynolds sent a pass across the crease to freshman Glenn
Hartman-Mattson (Ely, Minn.), who redirected the puck into the net
for her second goal of the season. The Cardinals extended
their lead just 27 seconds into the second period on a power play,
as Reynolds made a nice move around the PSU defense and scored into
the top corner of the net. Senior Leah Coe (Appleton, Wisc.)
made it 3-0 with her first goal of the season on a shot from the
point at the 11:17 mark.
Plymouth State got on the board with 2:30 to play in the second,
when freshman Jamie O'Brien (Chelmsford,
Mass.) slid a pass across the crease to Baruch, who converted her
third goal of the season. The Panther momentum didn't
last long though, as Wesleyan senior Julia Heffelfinger (Eden
Prairie, Minn.) scored on a rebound off a shot by junior MJ Cardin
(Middletown, Md.) just 15 seconds later to put the Cardinals
ahead4-1 after two.
Junior Anne Wheeler (Barrington, R.I.) rounded out the scoring for
Wesleyan with an unassisted marker midway through the third period,
intercepting a pass and going in alone to notch her first goal of
the campaign.
Wesleyan finished with a 38-21 advantage in shots on goal.
PSU freshman goalie Ali Ponte (Richmond Hill,
Ont.) finished with 33 saves in the setback. The
visitors converted 1-of-6 on the power play while the Panthers came
up empty in eight tries with an extra skater.
PSU is back in action this weekend, playing in the Castleton
Invitational in Vermont. The Panthers will meet Potsdam State
in the 4:00 p.m. game on Friday. Wesleyan plays a pair of
NESCAC games this weekend, Friday at Middlebury (7:00 p.m.) and
