Box Score Panthers post shutout win with two third-period
goals
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Freshman goaltender Ali
Ponte (Richmond Hill, Ont.) stopped all 22 shots she faced
and classmates Katie Landry (Agawam, Mass.) and
Rebecca Fogg (White River Jct., Vt.) scored a pair
of third-period goals just 20 seconds apart Saturday afternoon as
Plymouth State University defeated Castleton State College, 2-0, in
ECAC Women's East ice hockey action at Hanaway Rink.
The outcome, in the home finale for PSU, marked the first win of
the season for the Panthers, and the first victory for second-year
head coach Darcy Corson. PSU is now 1-20-1
overall and 1-15-1 in the ECAC Women's East, while Castleton
drops to 5-15-2 overall and 3-12-1 in conference play.
The game was close the entire way. Neither team was able to
score in the first 40 minutes of play, despite 17 shots on goal for
Plymouth State and 15 for Castleton and each team getting four
power play opportunities.
The teams continued to go back and forth in the third period, and
Plymouth State got on the board at the 9:30 mark. PSU was
pressuring the Castleton net when the puck came out to the point,
where Landry, a freshman defenseman, blasted a slapshot high past a
screened goalie and into the top of the net for a 1-0 Panther
lead. The rink was still buzzing moments later when Fogg
picked up a loose puck at home own blue line and went in on
breakaway and scored to give the Panthers a two-goal lead.
PSU was able to kill the final 10 minutes off the clock, including
the final minute when Castleton pulled its goalie and played with
six skaters. Jubilation erupted on the Panther bench as time
expired, and the team celebrated around Ponte, who recorded her
first career shutout.
The Panthers finished with a 25-22 advantage in shots on
goal. Senior Amanda Hoy (Brockport, N.Y.) was strong in the
Castleton goal, making 23 saves.
PSU wraps up the season next Friday with a conference road game at
Salve Regina. Castleton returns home for a conference set
next weekend, hosting UMass Boston on Friday and Saint Anselm on
Saturday.
