PSU Field Hockey defeats Thomas College

Team effort helps in win 

WATERVILLE, ME – The Plymouth State field hockey team beat Thomas College with a 5-1 non-conference decision to Thomas College on Wednesday night at Bernatchez Field.

The Panthers move to 8-5 (6-4 LEC) on the season while the Terriers fall to 3-11 (1-3 NAC) overall.  Lily Davis tallied two goals for Plymouth, including the game-winner.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Terriers struck early in the 13th minute of the first half on a goal from senior Gabby Martell (Gorham, Maine / Gorham).  Freshman Kelci Faulkingham took the initial shot off of a corner attempt that was stopped by Panther keeper junior Alivia Bates (Pennsauken, NJ).  Martell batted the ball out of the air into the Plymouth goal for a 1-0 lead. 
  • The Panthers evened the score in the 20th minute as senior Nicole Burgess (Mexico, ME) fired in a shot from out front on a centering feed from freshman Kate McPhearson (Conway, NH).  Three minutes later, Burgess took a deep shot that deflected off Thomas keeper Abbie Charrier (Waldo, Maine / Mt. View).  The rebound went right to junior Lily Davis (Boscawen, NH) on the left post who slammed in the ball for 2-1 lead going into the half.
  • Four minutes into the first half, a bouncing ball went past the Terriers defense at midfield sending in Burgess and Davis in all alone on Charrier.  Davis received a one-time pass from Burgess on the left side and notched her second goal of the game.   Plymouth tacked on two goals in the final two minutes on a long shot from junior Katie Martin (Waterbury Center, VT) and a tip-in goal from freshman Kaihley Rafferty (Salem, CT) to finish at 5-1.
  • Charrier turned aside nine shots in the defeat for the Terriers while Bates made three saves for the Panthers in the win.  Plymouth outshot Thomas 16-6 while the Terriers held a 7-5 advantage in penalty corners.

 

NEXT MATCH

The Panthers travel to Eastern Connecticut on Saturday, September 22, in a 12:00 game for. The Terriers will host Castleton on Saturday, October 22, in a 11:00 a.m.
