BABSON PARK, Mass. – Junior
Alex Rives (Gilford, N.H.) went 1-for-3 and reached base twice but Plymouth State University was held down by regional power Babson College, 10-0, in non-conference baseball action at Govoni Field on Monday afternoon.
Playing for the first time in ten days, the Panthers were limited to three hits and two walks as Babson, which is receiving votes in the latest D3baseball.com/NCBWA national poll, jumped out to a first inning lead and never looked back.
Plymouth State slips to 5-9, while the Beavers improve to 6-4.
The Basics:
- Plymouth State 0, Babson 10
- Plymouth State (5-9)
- Babson (6-4)
How it Happened:
- After retiring the side in order in the top of the first, the Beavers' offense came out swinging with five hits in the bottom half to plate four runs.
- The hosts tacked on a single run in the second to push the lead to 5-0.
- Junior Trey Parker (Lebanon, N.H.) settled down from there, allowing just two singles over the next three innings.
- The Panthers got a pair of runners on with one down in the top of the fifth after senior Bryan McGrath (Franklin, Mass.) walked and freshman Owen Baum (Saint Michaels, Md.) followed with a single. The next batter hit the ball on a line but right at the second baseman, and a flyout ended the threat.
- PSU had two runners on base again in the sixth after a walk to Rives and a hit batter, but a double play ball retired the side.
- Babson used a two-out rally to plate two runs in the bottom half. After a leadoff single, Parker retired the next two hitters on a bunt and groundout, but a two-out triple pushed across another run and ended Parker's day, and another runner scampered home on a wild pitch to make it 7-0.
- Plymouth State attempted to rally again in the ninth on Rives' single and a base hit by sophomore Luke Sokolski (Waterford, Conn.), but another twin killing closed out the game.
By the Numbers:
- Rives finished 1-for-3 with a walk, while Baum also had a hit in three at bats.
- Sokolski went 1-for-4.
- McGrath's walk and a hit by pitch to sophomore Jackson Curtis (Jefferson, N.H.) were PSU's other baserunners.
- Parker lasted 5.2 innings and fell to 1-2 on the year.
- Senior Noah Wachter (Concord, N.H.) worked the final two innings, striking out three.
- Babson had 19 points in this week's D3Baseball.com/NCBWA Top 25 Poll.
