SB: Picard shines in sweep of Rhode Island College

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Senior Emily Picard (Berlin, N.H.) had three hits in the opener and played sparkling defense in game two as Plymouth State University took both ends of a Little East Conference (LEC) softball doubleheader against Rhode Island College at D&M Park on Friday afternoon.

Picard had three of the Panthers' five hits and drove in two in the first game as Plymouth State rode the arm of sophomore Nicole LeBrun (Concord, N.H.) to a 3-1 victory.

Picard's RBI double helped the Panthers plate four runs in the sixth inning of the night cap to turn a 2-0 lead into a comfortable 6-0 victory. The catcher added a pair of fantastic catches on foul popups, including one right against the backstop.

Plymouth State jumps to 9-14 overall and evens its record in the LEC to 3-3, while RIC slips to 8-10 and 2-6 in conference action.

The Basics:
  • Game One: Plymouth State 3, RIC 1
  • Game Two: Plymouth State 6, RIC 0
    • Plymouth State (9-14, 3-3 LEC)
    • RIC (8-10, 2-6 LEC)
How it Happened (Game One):
  • Plymouth State got a first inning run when senior Lauren Archambault (Rehoboth, Mass.) singled and was bunted to second. With two down, Picard roped a single to left for the early lead.
  • RIC pulled even in the third when the Anchorwomen's first baserunner came around to score on a one-out double.
  • Sophomore Vanessa Bryan (Stoneham, Mass.) nearly put the Panthers back on top in the third, but her long drive down the left field line just missed hitting the foul pole.
  • PSU took advantage of some sloppy play to plate a pair of runs in the fifth. Senior Niah Colby (Lunenburg, Vt.) singled with one out and a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt attempt put runners on first and second. The next batter popped out, but the third baseman's throw to double off the runner at first went into right field allowing both runners to move up a base, and the right fielder threw the ball away allowing another run to score.
  • After a walk, Picard dropped a single on the right field line to score another run.
  • The run support was more than enough for LeBrun, who cruised through the final two innings to pick up the win.
By the Numbers (Game One):
  • Picard had a perfect game at the plate, finishing 3-for-3 with two RBI.
  • Colby and Archambault each had singles. Archambault scored twice, while Colby also crossed the plate.
  • LeBrun had a dominant performance in the circle, giving up just four hits and a walk while striking out four in the complete game win.

How it Happened (Game Two):
  • The Anchorwomen threatened in the first when the leadoff hitter singled and went to third when the ball got past the outfielder. Sophomore Alyssa Wilson (Haverhill, Mass.) induced a comebacker for the first out and PSU cut the runner down at the plate on a ground ball to third, before a strikeout ended the threat.
  • Plymouth State turned a pretty double play to end the second on a grounder to Colby and Archambault's quick turn at second base just nipped the batter at first.
  • The Panthers got on the board in the fourth. Archambault walked and RIC thew wildly on Bryan's bunt attempt to allow Archambault to score all the way from first. Freshman Mia Ly (Lowell, Mass.) followed with a perfect sacrifice to knock in Bryan and make it 2-0.
  • Freshman Madison Pelletier (New Gloucester, Maine) came on in relief after a leadoff walk in the fifth. The runner was bunted to second before Pelletier got a big strikeout and Picard made a great catch on a foul popup against the backstop to end the inning.
  • The Panthers put the game out of reach with four runs in the sixth. Archambault beat out an infield hit and was bunted to second ahead of Ly's double to the fence in left center field. Picard followed with a shot over the left fielder's head for an RBI double to extend the lead to 4-0 and freshman Jade Guertin (Burrillville, R.I.) kept the line moving with a run-scoring single through the right side.
  • Senior Katie Burk (East Islip, N.Y.) capped the inning with her fielder's choice to make it 6-0 and junior Sam McCann (Berlin, N.H.) closed out the win with a strikeout.
By the Numbers (Game Two):
  • All four of the Panthers' hits came in the sixth inning.
  • Archambault reached base three times (single, two walks) and scored a pair of runs.
  • Ly drove in two and scored a run while going 1-for-2 at the plate.
  • Wilson worked four-plus scoreless innings to pick up the win and improve to 3-2. Pelletier struck out two over her 2.2 innings, while McCann got a swinging strikeout to seal the win.

Up Next:
  • The Panthers head to the University of Massachusetts Boston for a pair of LEC games on Saturday (Apr. 16) with the opener set for a 1:00 p.m. start.
