HARTFORD, Conn. – Junior
Amelia Julian (Apple Valley, Minn.) finished with 34 saves, but Trinity College skated past Plymouth State University, 4-0, in a non-conference women's ice hockey game at Albert Creighton Williams Rink on Wednesday afternoon.
The hosts converted a close-range shot midway through the opening period. Senior
Taylor Thomas (Prior Lake, Minn.) nearly pulled the Panthers even moments later, but her breakaway shot sailed just wide.
Trinity extended the margin with a short-handed tally early in the second period before padding the lead later in the frame. Thomas had another breakaway chance with around nine minutes left in the period, but the Bantams' goaltender came up with a big save and PSU was unable to rally in the third.
Plymouth State slips to 2-13-0, while Trinity improves to 5-7-0.
The Basics:
- Plymouth State 0, Trinity 4
- Plymouth State (2-13-0)
- Trinity (5-7-0)
How it Happened:
- Scoring chances were at a minimum in the early going. Trinity had an opportunity midway through the frame when a bouncing puck found a Bantams' skater in the slot, but Julian was up to the challenge.
- Trinity's forecheck forced a defensive zone turnover at the 10:55 mark and the hosts converted a close-range shot for a 1-0 lead.
- Senior Taylor Thomas (Prior Lake, Minn.) intercepted a pass in the offensive zone with just over three minutes left in the frame before whipping a quick shot in the slot, but the puck drifted just wide.
- Thomas snagged a loose puck in the neutral zone and skated in on a breakaway in the opening minute of the second, but the Bantams' goaltender came up with a big stop to keep the Panthers off the board.
- Trinity extended the lead with a shorthanded goal at the 6:02 mark of the period. The Bantams fired a long clearance off the end boards and the skater stuffed the puck inside the near post to make it 2-0.
- Senior Abigale McGee (Bozeman, Mont.) blasted a slapshot on target with just over ten minutes left in the period, but it was gloved by the Trinity goalie.
- Thomas had another breakout chance less than a minute later, but her shot from the right side was kicked aside.
- The hosts extended the margin to 3-0 at the 12:16 mark on a 2-on-1 break.
- The score remained the same until late in the third period when an intercepted pass led to a 1-on-0 for the Bantams to account for the final score.
By the Numbers:
- Julian's 34 saves were one shy of her season high, recorded just last week.
- Thomas led the Panthers with seven shots, including five on goal, though the Bantams held a 38-17 advantage in shots for the game.
- Plymouth State blocked nine shots in the game, with freshman Sanna Augustsson (Satila, Sweden) notching a pair.
- Neither team was successful on the power play. PSU finished 0-for-5, while the Bantams were 0-for-4.
- This was just the fifth meeting between the two teams, with Trinity improving to 4-1.
