PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Senior
Sophie Streed (Surry, N.H.) posted her first career two-goal game to help Plymouth State University earn a key point with a 2-2 tie against Salem State University in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) women's ice hockey action at Hanaway Rink on Saturday afternoon.
With the Panthers holding tight to the final playoff spot, Streed came up big scoring twice in a span of just seven seconds to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead.
Salem State potted the equalizer with a power play goal late in the second period and neither goaltender would budge as the team's skated to the draw.
Plymouth State moves to 3-17-1 and 2-11-1 in the NEHC. The Panthers maintain their one-point edge over Salem State for the eighth and final playoff spot. The Vikings move to 3-13-2 and 1-11-2 in conference play.
The Basics:
- Plymouth State 2, Salem State 2 (OT)
- Plymouth State (3-17-1, 2-11-1 NEHC)
- Salem State (3-13-2, 1-11-2 NEHC)
How it Happened:
- The Vikings went up midway through the first when junior goaltender Amelia Julian (Apple Valley, Minn.) came out of the crease to poke a loose puck away. The puck deflected off a Salem skate and back to a skater, who popped it into the unguarded net with 9:03 left in the first.
- Streed pulled the Panthers even just 87 seconds later. She stole the puck in the offensive zone and dumped it behind the Salem goal. Junior Robyn Grant (Airdrie, Alberta) skated around and backhanded a pass through the crease where Streed deposited it into the goal to tie things at 1-1.
- Just seven seconds later Streed was at it again. PSU controlled the ensuing faceoff and Streed skated to the high slot where her wrist shot beat the Salem goaltender to the stick side.
- PSU would hold the narrow lead until late in the second period when the Vikings were able to convert a power play chance after knocking the puck in during a scrum in front of the goal with 2:51 left in the stanza.
- Neither team was able to convert in the third period, sending the game to overtime.
- Plymouth State dominated the extra frame, outshooting the Vikings by a 9-1 margin. Streed and freshman Sanna Augustsson (Satila, Sweden) skated in on a 2-on-1 in the opening minute of the period, but the Vikings' goalie corralled the shot without allowing a rebound.
- Senior Taylor Thomas (Prior Lake, Minn.) streaked in and fired a shot from the right circle that was blockered away and Augustsson's wraparound bid midway through the stanza was denied.
- PSU's best chance came with just under two minutes left, when sophomore Emily DeSimone (Walpole, Mass.) left a drop pass for Augustsson. Her initial shot was knocked down by the goalie and the Vikings' netminder made multiple saves as the Panthers attempted to stuff in the rebound.
By the Numbers:
- Streed's multi-goal game was the first of her career.
- Grant, senior Meghan Hamilton (Walpole, Mass.) and junior Isabella Borbridge (Calgary, Alberta) recorded assists for the Panthers. Borbridge's helper was her sixth of the season, third most on the team.
- Plymouth State outshot the Vikings by a 45-18 margin. Thomas and Streed fired six shots apiece.
- PSU was 0-for-3 on the power play, while the Vikings finished 1-for-5.
- Julian finished with 16 saves for the Panthers.
- Plymouth State holds a slight 5-4-3 edge in the all-time series, though the Panthers are winless (0-2-1) in the last three meetings.
- Three of the last four contests have gone to overtime and none of the four games have been decided by more than a goal.
Up Next:
- Plymouth State makes the long trip to western New York next weekend for a pair of NEHC contests, starting with William Smith on Friday (Feb. 3).
