WSWIM: Gaigals leads Panthers at Bridgewater State Invitational

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Sophomore Jackie Gaigals (Rochester, N.H.) won the 50-yard butterfly and posted three top-four individual finishes to help the Plymouth State University women's swim team to a fourth-place finish at the Bridgewater State Invitational at Dr. Mary Jo Moriarty Pool on Saturday.
 
Gaigals out-touched her competition in the 50-yard butterfly to win by just 0.31 seconds, establishing a personal best time in the event. She added fourth-place showings in the 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard IM, while swimming the opening leg of PSU's second place 400-yard freestyle relay team.
 
As a team, the Panthers finished fourth out of seven teams and just four points shy of third-place finisher Rhode Island College.

Individual Event Top Finishes: Teaming Up: How it Happened:
  • Sophomore Emma Seward (Los Angeles, Calif.) got the Panthers out to a good start with a third place showing in the exhausting 1650-yard freestyle after touching the wall in 21:10.93.
  • Gaigals rode the momentum to victory in the 50-yard butterfly with a personal best time of 29.44.
  • Freshman Ollie Kramer (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) took third in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:12.28 and sophomore Liv Bailey (Wrentham, Mass.) followed with a fourth-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:08.96.
  • Junior Liana Gobin (Belfast, Maine) touched the wall in 3:16.49 to finish fourth in the 200-yard butterfly, before sophomore Paige Lee (Stratham, N.H.) swam to a fifth-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 27.69.
  • Gaigals and Kramer went four-five in the 100-yard freestyle with times of 1:01.20 and 1:01.32, respectively.
  • Bailey posted her second fourth place of the day with a 2:30.97 in the 200-yard backstroke.
  • Gaigals capped her outstanding individual day with fourth place in the 100-yard IM in 1:12.82.
  • Seward was second in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:48.55.
  • Lee claimed fifth in the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 33.15, and PSU's 400-yard freestyle relay team of Gaigals, Lee, Bailey and Kramer finished just off the winning pace for a second place showing in 4:09.26.
