BRUNSWICK, Maine – Sophomore
Katie Porrello (Milford, Conn.) scored twice to help Plymouth State University rally with three third-period goals, but Bowdoin College potted an overtime winner to top the Panthers, 4-3, in a non-conference women's ice hockey game at Sidney Watson Arena on Friday night.
The Polar Bears, receiving votes in the latest USCHO.com poll, scored a pair of goals in the opening 8:39 to jump in front, then added the lone marker of the second period for a 3-0 lead.
Porrello got the Panthers on the board just 1:15 into the third period and freshman
Laura Castronova (Hauppauge, N.Y.) followed less than a minute later to make it a one-score game.
Porrello potted her second of the night on the power play at the 10:36 mark of the third to tie the game and things would remain deadlocked through the end of regulation.
Bowdoin was able to sneak away with the win 1:53 into the extra frame on a breakaway goal to account for the final score.
Senior
Amelia Julian (Apple Valley, Minn.) finished with 41 saves in the losing effort.
Plymouth State dips to 3-5-0, while Bowdoin moves to 5-3-0.
The Basics:
- Plymouth State 3, Bowdoin 4 (OT)
- Plymouth State (3-5-0)
- Bowdoin (5-3-0)
How it Happened:
- The hosts got on the board 4:10 into the opening period and doubled the margin just over four minutes later.
- Julian settled in but the Polar Bears extended the lead to 3-0 with 4:13 left in the middle stanza.
- Plymouth State began its comeback bid early in the third period. Senior Mia Zaniboni (Braintree, Mass.) played the puck off the boards and through the neutral zone and Porrello skated past a defender before launching a shot off the Bowdoin goaltender's glove and into the net 1:15 into the frame.
- Castronova cut the deficit to 3-2 just 52 seconds later. Sophomore Sanna Augustsson (Sätila, Sweden) poked the puck free at the half wall and Castronova flew down the right side on a 2-on-1 break before lifting a wrister to the top right corner to make it a one-goal game.
- Julian turned aside shot after shot to keep the game close and the Panthers rewarded her efforts with a power play strike midway through the frame. Porrello skated through the top of the zone before dumping the puck toward the goal and it dribbled past the screened goalie to knot the score at 3-3 with 9:24 left in regulation.
- Neither team was able to break the tie in regulation, sending the game to overtime.
- A Bowdoin skater worked the puck around the defense for a breakaway chance, converting on the backhand 1:53 into the extra frame to end the game.
