20231209 - WH vs Williams

Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey | | Christopher J. Kilmer, Assistant Athletics Director, Athletics Communications

WH: Williams thunders past Panthers

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Senior Amelia Julian (Apple Valley, Minn.) made 31 saves, but Williams College used a big second period to topple Plymouth State University, 7-0, in a non-conference women's ice hockey game at Hanaway Rink on Saturday afternoon.

Following the game, several hundred teddy bears were tossed onto the ice as part of the annual Teddy Bear Toss. The bears will be donated to the Children's Hospital at Dartmouth (CHaD) in the coming weeks to provide comfort and support to over 2,000 pediatric patients.

Williams broke the scoreless tie midway through the first period, then erupted for five tallies in the middle stanza. A late empty net goal in the third accounted for the final score.

Plymouth State wraps up the fall semester at 3-6-0, while Williams goes to 4-1-0.

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 0, Williams 7
    • Plymouth State (3-6-0)
    • Williams (4-1-0)
How it Happened:
  • Williams broke through for the game's first goal midway through the opening period.
  • PSU's best chance of the frame came in the final minutes when sophomore Katie Porrello (Milford, Conn.) blocked a pass at the Ephs' blue line resulting in a 2-on-0 break. Senior Robyn Grant (Airdrie, Alberta) grabbed the loose puck and sent a pass to Porrello on the left side, who made a move around the goaltender, but her shot was stuffed, and the rebound attempt sailed high.
  • The Ephs doubled the margin with a low angle shot just 23 seconds into the second.
  • Williams rode the momentum to strike for three more scores in a 1:55 span, then added another tally with 3:20 left on the clock to take a commanding 6-0 lead into the second intermission.
  • Sophomore Jacqueline Martin (Smithfield, R.I.) made a beautiful two-line pass to hit Porrello for a breakaway chance midway through the third but her bid to the top right corner was just wide.
  • Julian made a great kick save a minute later when the Ephs countered with a breakout chance of their own.
  • PSU aggressively pulled Julian with two minutes to play, and Williams cashed in with an empty net goal to account for the final score.
By the Numbers:
  • Julian finished with 31 saves to top the 30-save threshold for the third time in her last four games.
  • Williams held a 38-15 advantage in shots.
  • PSU went 0-for-1 on the power play, while the Ephs finished 1-for-2.
  • The Panthers blocked 13 shots.
  • Junior Emily DeSimone (Norwood, Mass.) won 6-of-7 faceoffs.
  • The matchup was just the fourth meeting between the two teams.

Up Next:
  • After a break for final exams and the holiday recess, Plymouth State returns to Hanaway Rink to square off against Colby College on Jan. 2 at 4:00 p.m.
