CLERMONT, Fla. – Freshman
Emily Antrim (Limerick, Maine) threw a complete game shutout to help the Plymouth State University softball team split a pair of games during its second day of action at THE Spring Games at Hancock Park on Sunday.
Antrim needed just 70 pitches to carve through the Macalester College lineup and sophomore
Mia Ly (Lowell, Mass.) provided the offensive firepower with a double and homer while driving in two in a 5-0 win in the opener.
Mount St. Joseph University used a five-run fifth to top PSU, 7-2, in the Panthers' second game of the day. Graduate student
Emily Picard (Berlin, N.H.) went deep and senior
Sam McCann (Berlin, N.H.) doubled to lead the offense.
Plymouth State moves to 1-3, while Macalester is 5-3 and Mount St. Joseph is 5-5.
The Basics:
- Game 1: Plymouth State 5, Macalester 0
- Game 2: Plymouth State 2, Mount St. Joseph 7
- Plymouth State (1-3)
- Macalester (5-3)
- Mount St. Joseph (3-5)
How it Happened (Macalester):
- Freshman Abbey Nezuch (Marlborough, Mass.) drove in sophomore Jade Guertin (Oakland, R.I.) to take a quick lead in the top of the first.
- Sophomore Madison Pelletier (New Gloucester, Maine) doubled to start the second and eventually scored on a wild pitch as PSU doubled its lead.
- Macalester got a runner to third with one out in the bottom of the frame, but Antrim got a popup and foul out to escape the jam.
- Picard singled and Ly smacked a double to right as the Panthers tacked on another run in the fourth.
- Ly's two-run shot in the sixth extended the margin to 5-0, and with Antrim dealing the lead was more than enough.
By the Numbers (Macalester):
- Antrim faced just three over the minimum, scattering four hits and striking out two in her complete game win.
- Ly drove in two while going 2-for-4 with her homer and double. Nezuch (two singles) and Pelletier (single, double) also had two hits.
- Picard and junior Kacie Johnston (Campton, N.H.) both singled and walked, with Picard scoring a pair of runs.
- The teams last met during the 1998 season.
How it Happened (Mount St. Joseph):
- The Lions took a quick lead in the first, using a walk, sacrifice and single to go up 1-0.
- Back-to-back doubles with one out in the fourth extended the Mount St. Joseph lead to 2-0.
- Ly singled and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch in the bottom half of the inning but was stranded there.
- MSJ took advantage of some defensive miscues to push five runs across in the fifth.
- Picard homered to lead off the bottom of the frame to get the Panthers on the board.
- Plymouth State attempted to rally in the sixth as graduate student Lauren Archambault (Rehoboth, Mass.) and Ly singled ahead of McCann's two-bagger to make it 7-2, but the Lions escaped further damage.
By the Numbers (Mount St. Joseph):
- Sophomore Kate McGrath (Boston, Mass.) went the distance but was let down by the defense as just two of the seven Lions' runs were earned. She struck out two.
- Ly had another two-hit game with a pair of singles, while Picard's homer and McCann's double were the only extra base hits.
- Archambault's single was PSU's only other base knock and the Lions' pitching did not surrender a free pass.
- This was the first meeting between the two teams.
Up Next:
- The Panthers square off against Wisconsin-Lutheran and Carthage on Monday (Mar. 13) as THE Spring Games competition continues.
