SB: Antrim, McGrath earn complete game wins to close Florida trip

CLERMONT, Fla. – Freshman Emily Antrim (Limerick, Maine) and sophomore Kate McGrath (Boston, Mass.) each threw complete games to help the Plymouth State University softball team wrap up its appearance at THE Spring Games with a pair of wins on Friday.

Antrim needed just 76 pitches to carve through the New England College lineup and sophomore Jade Guertin (Oakland, R.I.) ripped a key double to plate a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh as Plymouth State topped NEC, 4-2, in the opener.

McGrath was equally strong in the second game, surrendering just one run and five hits over seven innings. Freshman Abbey Nezuch (Marlborough, Mass.) came up with the clutch hit, a two-run single, as the Panthers upended Western New England University by a 2-1 score.

Plymouth State has won four straight to finish its spring break trip with a 6-6 mark. NEC slides to 3-6 and Western New England goes to 8-3.

The Basics:
  • Game 1: Plymouth State 4, NEC 2
  • Game 2: Plymouth State 2, Western New England 1
    • Plymouth State (6-6)
    • NEC (3-6)
    • Western New England (8-3)
How it Happened (NEC):
  • Graduate student Lauren Archambault (Rehoboth, Mass.) and freshman Emily Bessette (Cranston, R.I.) singled to start the game. The Pilgrims had a chance to record an out on the infield, but a muffed throw allowed Archambault to score and senior Sam McCann (Berlin, N.H.) drove in a run with an RBI ground out for a quick 2-0 lead.
  • The Pilgrims had second and third with one out in the second but sophomore Kaity Montelongo (South Paris, Maine) made a heads up play to cut down the lead runner on a grounder to third for the second out. NEC cut the margin to 2-1 when a run scored on a passed ball, but Antrim got a strikeout to preserve the lead.
  • Bessette tripled down the right field line to start the third, but the Panthers were unable to capitalize.
  • PSU tacked on some important insurance runs in the seventh. Graduate student Emily Picard (Berlin, N.H.) walked and Nezuch beat out an infield hit. Guertin followed with a double to the gap in right center that scored both runners and gave the Panthers a 4-1 cushion.
  • The extra runs proved valuable as the Pilgrims attempted to rally in their last at bat. NEC opened the inning with a leadoff double, but Antrim was able to limit the damage to just one run as PSU held on for the win.
By the Numbers (NEC):
  • Antrim scattered six hits and allowed just two runs (one earned) while striking out three. She needed just 76 pitches to finish the game, evening her record at 2-2.
  • Plymouth State outhit the Pilgrims by a 12-6 margin and added six walks.
  • Bessette went 4-for-5 with a triple and run scored.
  • Nezuch was 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and a run scored, while Guertin went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI.
  • Archambault reached base three times with two singles and a walk.

How it Happened (Western New England):
  • Western New England used a single and hit batter to open the game but Montelongo again got the lead runner on a grounder to third. A walk loaded the bases and the Golden Bears took a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly.
  • Plymouth State's offense was mostly held in check until the bottom of the fourth. Archambault singled and was bunted to second and sophomore Mia Ly (Lowell, Mass.) followed with a base hit and steal to put two in scoring position. Nezuch knocked both runners in with a base hit for a 2-1 lead.
  • Western New England attempted to rally with two down in the fifth after recording back-to-back singles, but McGrath escaped with an infield popup.
  • The Panthers tried to tack on a run in the sixth as Bessette walked and was moved to second. With two down she took third on a wild pitch, but PSU was unable to drive her in.
  • McGrath set down the Golden Bears in order in the seventh to close out the win.
By the Numbers (Western New England):
  • McGrath improves to 3-1 on the year after scattering five hits and allowing just the one run in the complete game victory.
  • Archambault and sophomore Caroline Macri (Burlington, Mass.) each had two hits for the Panthers.
  • Macri reached base three times after also drawing a walk.

Up Next:
  • Plymouth State returns to action a week from Monday (Mar. 27) with a pair of games at Rivier University.
