20240109 - WH vs Trinity

Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey | | Christopher J. Kilmer, Assistant Athletics Director, Athletics Communications

WH: Wilson stands tall in battle with #13 Trinity

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Freshman Teagan Wilson (Salisbury, Mass.) turned aside 35 shots in her third collegiate start, but #13 Trinity College was able to hold off Plymouth State University, 3-0, in a non-conference women's ice hockey game at Hanaway Rink on Tuesday afternoon.

The Bantams took a first period lead just under six minutes into the contest. Plymouth State had a pair of fantastic chances to pull even in the second period but was unable to get the puck past the Trinity goaltender and the visitors responded with back-to-back goals three minutes apart to extend the margin to 3-0.

PSU pulled Wilson with just over two minutes remaining and a Trinity penalty gave the Panthers a 6-on-4, but again the Bantams' goalie was up to the task to hold on for the shutout.

The Panthers have run the gauntlet since returning from the holiday break, squaring off against three nationally ranked opponents in eight days in #11 Colby, #12 Elmira and #13 Trinity.

Plymouth State slips to 3-10-0, while the Bantams move to 7-3-2.

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 0, #13 Trinity 3
    • Plymouth State (3-10-0)
    • #13 Trinity (7-3-2)
How it Happened:
  • Trinity controlled play for much of the first period, taking a 1-0 lead 5:49 into the contest, but Wilson kept the game close with 12 saves in the frame.
  • Plymouth State had two great opportunities to pull even early in the second, but the Trinity goaltender came up big. Graduate student Abigale McGee (Bozeman, Mont.) took the puck from the farside wall and made a quick pass to junior Alanna Hoag (Clinton, Mass.), who was alone in the slot. Hoag collected and fired toward the nearside post, but a great glove save denied the chance and the puck was pushed out of danger.
  • Trinity was called for a penalty on the play, with the Panthers building heavy zone pressure during the ensuing power play, but the hosts were unable to find the back of the net.
  • Four minutes later, junior Emily DeSimone (Norwood, Mass.) had a blast from the left circle that was padded down. Sophomore Katie Porrello (Milford, Conn.) took a hack at the rebound, but the puck stayed out and the Bantams doubled the lead less than a minute later.
  • The visitors extended the margin to 3-0 with 7:41 left in the middle period.
  • In the final minute, sophomore Morgan Cunningham (Wrentham, Mass.) broke out of the defensive zone for a 3-on-1 counterattack. Senior Carsen Moffett (Kamloops, British Columbia) had her blast sticked away, though, and a pair of DeSimone close-range shots were blocked as the score remained 3-0 heading into the third.
  • Wilson kept the margin at three, stopping all ten shots she faced in the final period. Plymouth State pulled Wilson with just over two minutes remaining and a Trinity penalty gave PSU a 6-on-4, but the Panthers were unable to find the back of the net as time expired.
By the Numbers:
  • Wilson finished with 35 saves on the afternoon. She's stopped 105 total shots in her three games this season, averaging exactly 35 saves per game.
  • The Panthers blocked 22 shots as a team, with senior Lauren McNeil (Ottawa, Ontario) registering a game-high five. Classmate Mia Zaniboni (Braintree, Mass.) and sophomore Jacqueline Martin (Smithfield, R.I.) added three apiece.
  • Moffett won 8-of-11 faceoffs.
  • Trinity held a 38-18 edge in shots for the game.
  • Neither team was successful on the power play, as each side finished 0-for-2.
  • Plymouth State moves to 1-5-0 against the Bantams.

Up Next:
  • The Panthers are on the road for a pair of NEHC games this weekend, starting with a trip to Johnson & Wales on Friday (Jan. 12). Puck drop from the New England Sports Village in Attleboro, Mass. is set for 5:00 p.m.
