WENHAM, Mass. – Sophomore
Brendan Flynn (Arlington, Mass.) extended his hot streak at the dish with another three hit game and Plymouth State University used a seven-run second inning to thunder past Gordon College, 16-10, in a non-conference baseball game at J. Tec White Field on Monday afternoon.
The Panthers had just four hits in the second but sent 12 men to the plate taking advantage of an error, hit batter and three walks. Flynn blasted a three-run homer to push the margin to 7-0.
Gordon answered back with a three-spot in the bottom of the frame, but Flynn had run-scoring singles in the third and fifth and junior
Danny Quinn (Holliston, Mass.) drove in another run to extend the lead to 10-3.
Trailing 12-3, Gordon scored once in the sixth and added four runs in the seventh to pull within 12-8, but a run-scoring double and a Quinn's three-run shot in the eighth made it 16-8. The Fighting Scots got a pair of solo homers in the eighth to account for the final score.
Plymouth State jumps to 6-9, while the Fighting Scots move to 6-22.
The Basics:
- Plymouth State 16, Gordon 10
- Plymouth State (6-9)
- Gordon (6-22)
How it Happened:
- Plymouth State loaded the bases without a hit but was kept off the scoreboard in the first.
- A fielding error, hit batter and walk loaded the bases in the top of the second. Graduate student Alex Rives (Gilford, N.H.) stroked a two-run single to left to open the scoring. Junior Owen Baum (Saint Michaels, Md.) reached on a bunt hit to reload the bases and senior Luke Sokolski (Waterford, Conn.) walked to make it 3-0.
- A wild pitch plated another run before Flynn's blast down the right field line pushed the advantage to 7-0.
- Gordon came right back with three runs in the bottom of the inning.
- Sokolski was hit by a pitch with two down in the third and moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch before Flynn drove him home with a single to make it 8-3.
- Flynn came through again in the fifth. Rives poked a one-out single up the middle and Baum was hit by a pitch. With two away, Flynn stroked a single to right and Quinn followed with an RBI hit as the lead ballooned to 10-3.
- The Panthers took advantage of an error and walk to score two more in the sixth, with Baum pushing the margin to 12-3 with his run-scoring base hit.
- The Fighting Scots got a run back in the bottom of the inning, but sophomore Jack Gintof (Meredith, N.H.) got a called strike three as Gordon left the bases loaded.
- Gordon added four runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull within 12-8, but graduate student Nick Healey (Campton, N.H.) threw out an attempted base stealer at third to end the threat.
- Rives walked and stole second to start the eighth and Baum smashed a run-scoring double. After a ground out, a walk put runners on the corners and Quinn launched a deep blast to left to make it 16-8.
- Gordon hit a pair of solo shots in the bottom of the eighth to account for the final score.
