WATERVILLE, Maine – Freshman
Cam Manning (North Woodstock, N.H.) and graduate student
Alex Rives (Gilford, N.H.) had two hits apiece but Colby College used a six-run seventh inning to top Plymouth State University, 12-1, in a non-conference baseball game at Colby Baseball and Softball Complex on Wednesday afternoon.
The Mules raced out to a 5-0 lead through the first two innings. Plymouth State got a run back in the fifth, but the hosts answered responded in the bottom half before closing out the game with the big seventh inning.
Plymouth State slips to 9-18, while the Mules move to 26-8. Colby is ranked #26 in this week's American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) poll and is receiving votes in the current D3baseball.com poll.
The Basics:
- Plymouth State 1, Colby 12
- Plymouth State (9-18)
- Colby (26-8)
How it Happened:
- Rives opened the game with a single and moved to second on an error but he was stranded there.
- The Mules raced out of the gates with four runs in bottom of the frame.
- Junior Adrian Siravo (Gilmanton, N.H.) ripped a double to left center to lead off the second and freshman Ryan Morgado (Brentwood, N.H.) reached on an error, but Colby got out of the inning.
- The hosts tacked on a run in the last half of the frame to make it 5-0.
- PSU had base runners in the third and fourth before getting on the board in the fifth. Rives singled and senior Luke Sokolski (Waterford, Conn.) drew a walk. A Colby error allowed one run to score but that was all the Panthers would get.
- The Mules answered back with a run in the bottom of the inning, then erupted for six runs in the seventh to put the game out of reach.
By the Numbers:
- Rives reached base three times with a pair of singles and a walk. He scored the Panthers' lone run.
- Manning singled twice in four at bats.
- Junior Owen Baum (Saint Michaels, Md.) singled and walked.
Up Next:
- Plymouth State wraps up the regular season with a Little East Conference (LEC) double header at Keene State on Friday (May 3). The Panthers are in a four-way battle for the final two playoff spots.
