PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Senior
Katie Maloney (Calgary, Alberta) scored a pair of goals, including the game-tying goal with just 32 seconds remaining, as Plymouth State University tied Anna Maria College, 2-2, in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) women's ice hockey action at Hanaway Rink on Tuesday afternoon. The AMCATS won the shootout, 1-0.
Despite controlling play throughout, the Panthers found themselves down, 2-1, late in the third period. PSU pulled its goalie with 57 seconds to play, and Maloney scored when her blast from the right circle found its way through traffic to even the score with exactly 32 seconds to play.
Anna Maria went on the power play early in the extra session, but sophomore
Teagan Wilson (Salisbury, Mass.) made five key stops to help kill off the penalty and the game went into a shootout.
Following impressive stops by both goalies through the first two rounds, Anna Maria converted its final attempt with a shot to the top left corner and PSU was unable to answer back.
PSU moves to 7-5-1 (4-0-1 MASCAC), while Anna Maria sits at 4-9-1 (2-4-1 MASCAC).
The Basics:
- Plymouth State 2, Anna Maria 2 (Anna Maria wins shootout, 1-0)
- Plymouth State (7-5-1, 4-0-1 MASCAC)
- Anna Maria (4-9-1, 2-4-1 MASCAC)
How it Happened:
- The Panthers outshot Anna Maria by an 11-4 margin in the opening period and had three power play chances, but the game remained scoreless after the first period of action.
- PSU continued to control the pace of play in the middle stanza, but the AMCATS were able to convert a power play goal with 40 seconds left to take a 1-0 lead.
- Maloney, who registered her first career goal just two games ago, buried a slapper from the right side to tie the game at the 7:06 mark of the third.
- Anna Maria used another power play tally to regain the lead, 2-1, with less than six minutes to play and the score would remain the same into the final minute.
- PSU pulled Wilson and used its timeout as the game clock showed just 57.8 seconds remaining. Good puck movement left Maloney alone in nearly the same spot and her shot found the back of the net to even the game with 32.0 seconds to play.
- Wilson came up huge in the overtime period, stopping all six shots she faced, including five during an early power play opportunity, to secure the tie and send the game to a shootout.
- Both goalies made outstanding saves through the first two rounds of the shootout. Anna Maria converted on its third attempt, and PSU was unable to answer back.
By the Numbers:
- Maloney, who hadn't scored a goal in her first 54 career games, now has three goals in the last three contests.
