MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Senior Chase Anestis (Belmont, N.H.) and graduate student Ty Miller (Groton, Conn.) went unbeaten to advance to the semifinals of their respective weight classes as the Plymouth State University wrestling team competed at day one of the NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Championship at Wesleyan University on Saturday.
 
Needing a top three finish to secure a spot at this month's NCAA Division III Wrestling Championship, the pair got out to strong starts. Anestis rolled through his opening bout, winning by fall in the opening period before knocking off Jashon Holmes of VTSU Castleton, ranked 12th in the nation at 165 pounds and third in the New England region, with a 5-1 decision.
 
Miller had little trouble in his opening two matches, securing a pin early in the second period of his first match before a dominant technical fall win in his second contest of the day.
 
The duo will attempt to lock up spots at NCAAs tomorrow. A win in the semifinal round would guarantee a top two finish, while a setback would mean either would need consecutive wins in the consolation bracket to secure third place. PSU's last NCAA qualifier was Joe Aumann in the 2016-17 season, while the Panthers haven't had multiple qualifiers in the same season since the 1998-99 team qualified four wrestlers, including head coach Ryan Carr.
 
Plymouth State finished the first day of competition in 13th place.
 
 
The Basics:

How it Happened:

• Anestis started his day with a convincing win by fall over CJ Glaropoulos of Western New England, securing the pin in 1:38.
• Facing his stiffest competition this season, Anestis gutted out a 5-1 win by decision against Holmes, ranked 12th in the nation at the weight class in the most recent NWCA individual rankings.
• Miller pinned his first opponent, Ryan Hsu of WPI, early in the second period (3:33) to start his day.
• He followed with a dominant performance against Bridgewater State's Vincent Player, winning by technical fall, 24-9.
• Senior Damari Goldsmith-Greene (Whitman, Mass.) was pinned in his opening round match, but rebounded with an overpowering 28-9 technical fall win to extend his day. His weekend came to an end in the second consolation round, though, with a technical fall setback.
• Junior Nick Savariego (Hillsdale, N.J.) went 0-2 at 125 pounds.
• Freshmen Brody McDonald (Salem, N.H.) and Cam Monahan (Salem, N.H.) were both pinned twice in their respective matches at 133 pounds and 141 pounds.
• Senior Nick Antonucci (Windham, N.H.) lost by technical fall in his opener at 157 pounds. He put up a fight in his second match but was ultimately knocked out following a 9-6 loss by decision.
• Senior Robert Tarasuk (Hampton, N.H.) lost twice by fall at 174 pounds, while classmate Colin Hile (Walpole, Mass.) also went 0-2 with two pins against at 285 pounds.
