LEWISTON, Maine – Sophomore
Sam Salvi (Southborough, Mass.) delivered a clutch RBI single in the top of the 10th inning to propel Plymouth State University to a 1-0 victory over Bates College in a season-opening pitcher's duel at Leahey Field on Thursday afternoon.
Locked in a scoreless battle, junior
Chris Faherty (Phoenix, Ariz.) led off the 10th with a single and was sacrificed to second. Salvi followed with a sharp single through the left side, allowing Faherty to race home for the game's only run.
Sophomore
Greg Mayo (Dorchester, Mass.) closed out the win, recording two quick outs in the bottom of the frame. The Bobcats worked a walk to put the tying run on base, but Mayo induced a grounder to shortstop to secure his first career save.
Senior
Jason Smith (Charlestown, Mass.), junior
Alex Noel (Dover, N.H.) and Mayo combined to limit Bates to just three hits over ten dominant innings while striking out 11 Bobcats.
Plymouth State starts the season 1-0, while the Bobcats slide to 1-6.

How it Happened:
- Senior Danny Quinn (Holliston, Mass.) and graduate student Jackson Curtis (Jefferson, N.H.) hit back-to-back singles in the second inning, but Bates escaped the jam.
- The Bobcats put two runners on with one out in the third, but Smith responded with a popout and a strikeout to keep the game scoreless.
- Bates threatened again in the fifth, advancing a runner to second with one out, but Smith stranded him with his sixth strikeout of the game.
- PSU had a scoring opportunity in the sixth, putting two runners on, but a pair of flyouts ended the threat.
- In the seventh, Bates put a runner on third with one out following a triple to right, but Noel worked out of the jam with two ground balls.
- In the 10th, Faherty reached on an infield single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and scored the game's lone run on Salvi's RBI single.
- Mayo retired the first two batters in the bottom of the inning before walking a hitter, but a groundout to short sealed the win.
