BB: Salvi slugs three doubles, Panthers swept by Mt. Aloysius

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Sophomore Sam Salvi (Southborough, Mass.) smacked three doubles and reached base five times, but Mt. Aloysius College swept Plymouth State University in a non-conference doubleheader at the Myrtle Beach College Baseball Spring Training at the Polo Grounds on Tuesday.

Plymouth State was forced to play from behind early in game one, as the Mounties put up six runs in the first inning. PSU plated single runs in the second and third on RBI hits from seniors Sam Malgeri (Stratham, N.H.) and Scooter Summa (Ellicott City, Md.), but Mt. Aloysius maintained a 10-2 lead. Malgeri doubled in two more runs in the sixth, and the Panthers scored twice in the seventh but were unable to complete the rally.

In game two, the Mounties carried a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the third before graduate student Jackson Curtis (Jefferson, N.H.) tied the game with a two-run single. Mt. Aloysius answered with four runs in the fourth, but the Panthers responded with two in the bottom half. PSU cut the deficit 8-7 on Summa's RBI single in the fifth, but the Mounties added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth. Plymouth State brought the tying run to the plate in both the sixth and seventh innings but couldn't complete the comeback.

Plymouth State falls to 1-4, while Mt. Aloysius improves to 10-3.

How it Happened (Game One):
  • The Mounties scored four unearned runs in a six-run first to grab an early lead.
  • Senior Danny Quinn (Holliston, Mass.) singled to lead off the second and came around to score on Malgeri's RBI double, making it 6-1.
  • Mt. Aloysius added two in the bottom of the inning, but Salvi ripped a double to start the third. Summa's two-out RBI single cut the deficit to 8-2.
  • The Mounties tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the third.
  • Summa singled in the sixth and, after a strikeout, freshman Anthony Cooley (Brunswick, Maine) extended the inning with a base hit. Malgeri drove in both runners with his second double of the game.
  • Mt. Aloysius added a run in the bottom of the frame to make it 11-4.
  • PSU attempted to rally in the seventh, putting the first three runners on. Salvi reached on a wild pitch, and graduate student Luke Sokolski (Waterford, Conn.) pulled a single through the left side. Junior Brendan Flynn (Arlington, Mass.) followed with an RBI single, and a wild pitch put two runners in scoring position with none out. A sacrifice fly made it 11-6, but a strikeout ended the game.

  • The visitors added two more in the third to extend the lead.
  • PSU rallied for three runs in the bottom of the frame. Sophomore Josh Worthington (Pownal, Vt.) doubled and Salvi walked to start the inning. After back-to-back outs, Quinn doubled in a run, and Curtis followed with a two-run single to tie the game.
  • The Mounties answered right back with four runs in the fourth.
  • PSU kept battling in the bottom half, as Worthington doubled home Malgeri to make it 7-4. Salvi followed with a single, and Sokolski's sacrifice fly cut the deficit to two.

Quinn walked, and junior Andrew Faherty (Phoenix, Ariz.) reached on an error allowing pinch runner Login Desrochers (Raymond, Maine) to score. Malgeri drew a walk, and a double steal put two runners in scoring position. Summa's single cut the deficit to 8-7, but the Mounties escaped further trouble.
