MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Sophomore
Ray Campbell (Torrington, Conn.) smashed his first three collegiate home runs as Plymouth State University hammered Colby-Sawyer College, 18-12, in the Panthers' final game of the Myrtle Beach College Baseball Spring Training at Griffith Field on Thursday.
Campbell belted a two-run dinger in the second and added a solo shot an inning later. With one out in the ninth, he became just the fourth player in program history to hit three homers in a game, capping the Panthers' offensive explosion.
Every PSU batter finished with a multi-hit game, with Campbell going 4-for-5 with a walk, five RBIs and three runs scored. Plymouth State pounded out 25 total hits, just four shy of the program record, including eight extra-base knocks.
Sophomore
Sam Salvi (Southborough, Mass.) and senior
Danny Quinn (Holliston, Mass.) also recorded four-hit games for the Panthers.
Plymouth State moves to 3-5, while the Chargers fall to 3-10.
The Basics:
- Plymouth State 18, Colby-Sawyer 12
- Plymouth State (3-5)
- Colby-Sawyer (3-10)
How it Happened:
- Colby-Sawyer got a run in the bottom of the first with a bases-loaded hit by pitch, but junior Jackson Fish (Hanover, Mass.) escaped further trouble with a double-play ball.
- PSU answered with a four-run second. Quinn singled, and graduate student Jackson Curtis (Jefferson, N.H.) roped an RBI double. Campbell followed with a two-run blast, and graduate student Luke Sokolski (Waterford, Conn.) added a run-scoring single to make it 4-1.
- Campbell homered again in the third inning, a solo shot, extending the lead to 5-1.
- The Chargers rallied with three runs in the bottom half.
- Sokolski drove in a run in the fourth, and junior Brendan Flynn (Arlington, Mass.) legged out a two-run triple. Quinn followed with an RBI single to push the lead to 9-4.
- Colby-Sawyer answered with four runs in the fifth to trim the deficit to 9-8.
- PSU erupted for five runs in the next half inning, sending 11 batters to the plate. Flynn ripped an RBI double and Quinn added a two-run single for a 12-8 advantage. Senior Scooter Summa (Ellicott City, Md.) singled home a run and Salvi tacked on an RBI single to make it 14-8.
- The Chargers plated two in the bottom of the inning, but Plymouth State responded again. Campbell drove in a run with a single and senior Sam Malgeri (Stratham, N.H.) lifted a sacrifice fly to score Quinn, making it 16-10.
- Salvi walked, stole second, moved to third on Sokolski's base hit and scored on a passed ball in the eighth to push the lead to 17-10. Colby-Sawyer scored twice in the bottom half.
- Campbell crushed his third homer of the day in the ninth to account for the final score.
By the Numbers:
- Campbell ended up 4-for-5 with three homers, three runs scored and five RBIs. He became the fourth player in school history with a three-homer game and the first since All-American Josh Goulet accomplished the feat in 2019.
- Quinn posted a 4-for-6 day with three runs and three RBIs.
- Salvi reached base five times with four singles and a walk. He scored three runs, drove in one and stole two bases.
- Sokolski went 3-for-5 with a double, a walk, two runs scored and two RBIs, while Flynn singled, doubled, scored three times and drove in three.
- PSU's 25 hits were the most since the Panthers had 27 in a 26-9 drubbing of now-defunct Daniel Webster College in March 2016.
- Freshman Jake Adrien (East Hampstead, N.H.) and sophomore Greg Mayo (Dorchester, Mass.) were the only pitchers among the 12 used between both teams to not allow a run. Adrien recorded four outs with three strikeouts, while Mayo tossed a scoreless ninth.
