SKI: Nyman crushes huge second run at St. Lawrence slalom

WILMINGTON, N.Y. – Freshman Hjalmar Nyman (Stockholm, Sweden) ripped off a huge second run to post his first career top 20 finish as the Plymouth State University alpine ski teams wrapped up the St. Lawrence Carnival with the slalom at Whiteface Mountain Ski Resort on Friday.
 
Nyman ranked 28th after his morning run, then surged into 17th after posting the third-fastest time of the afternoon. Sophomore Megan Heckey (Québec City, Québec) secured the top time for the women, placing 30th.
 
Both teams finished ninth in the team standings.
 
 
The Basics:

How it Happened (Men's SL):
  • Nyman posted an opening run of 44.85 seconds to rank 28th, but threw down a huge second run to surge up the rankings. His second run of 43.69 was the third-fastest of the afternoon to lift him all the way to 17th – well above his bib number of 61.
  • Freshman Emile Prouvost (Charleston, S.C.) was 35th after getting down the hill in 45.15 seconds but could not complete his second run.
  • Freshman Harry Duncan (Ramsdell, United Kingdom) sat in 43rd with a morning run of 45.32 seconds. He climbed 11 spots to 32nd after a strong second run to post a combined time of 1:30.54.
  • Sophomore Alvin Guteland Beiming (Södertälje, Sweden), and freshmen Charlie Howe (Lake Placid, N.Y.) and Ethan Rathbone (Newburyport, Mass.) were closely bunched in 67th, 71st, and 72nd after the morning, though none qualified for a second run.
  • Senior Vincent Fosser (Helsingborg, Sweden) also did not qualify for a second run after his first run of 46.72 seconds.
How it Happened (Women's SL):
  • Heckey was PSU's top finisher in the morning, ranking 38th with a first run of 49.27 seconds. She followed with a second run of 49.00 to finish 30th with a combined 1:38.27.
  • Senior Gill Hamilton (Ottawa, Ontario), freshman Märta Hahlin (Arvidsjaur, Sweden), and sophomore Marlene Sophie Krohn (Drammen, Norway) were tightly bunched in the morning – separated by just 0.59 seconds – to rank 40th, 45th, and 50th, respectively.
  • Hahlin bumped up to 37th with a combined 1:39.75, one spot above Hamilton (1:39.84), while Krohn jumped ten spots to 40th after a combined 1:40.34.
  • Sophomore Laurence Bouchard (Québec City, Québec) clocked a 50.53 opening run to rank 57th and improved ten spots after a second run of 51.43 to rank 47th (1:41.96).
  • Sophomore Olivia Andersson (Vaxholm, Sweden) and freshman Erin Husken (North Vancouver, British Columbia) were 65th and 69th after the morning runs, though neither qualified for a second run.
 
Up Next:
  • Plymouth State heads to Dartmouth Skiway next weekend for the Dartmouth Carnival, with the giant slalom set for Friday (Jan. 30) and slalom on Saturday (Jan. 31).
