FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Plymouth
State University baseball team wrapped up its spring break trip to
Florida Friday afternoon with a doubleheader split against SUNY
Fredonia in the annual Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic. PSU won the
opener, 9-4, and Fredonia came back to take the second game, 8-7.
After falling behind 3-0 in the opener, PSU tied it up on a
three-run home run by sophomore Steve Picco
(Marshfield, Mass.). The teams traded runs in the fourth
inning, and the Panthers pulled away with one run in the fifth
inning and four runs in the sixth. Picco added an RBI double
to finish with four RBI, and senior Brandon Hodge
(Bradford, Vt.) hit a solo home run.
Freshman Seth Labossiere (Lincoln, R.I.) pitched
five innings for PSU and earned his first collegiate victory.
Freshman Chris Bryant (Lebanon, N.H.) closed out
the Blue Devils to earn his first career save.
The nightcap started out as a slugfest, as PSU led 3-2 after one
inning and the game was tied 6-6 after two frames. Fredonia
pulled ahead with a run in the fourth but the Panthers tied it at
7-7 in the sixth. The Blue Devils went on to push the
game-winning run across the plate in the bottom of the seventh
inning.
The PSU hitters finished with 12 hits in the nightcap.
Freshman Grant Livingston (Niantic, Conn.) had
three hits, including a double, and Hodge and junior Kevin
Levandowski (Derry, N.H.) contributed a pair of hits each.
The Panthers wrap up the trip with a 3-9 record. The team
returns to New Hampshire Saturday, with the next game slated for
this Wednesday at Babson College (3:30 p.m.) The Little East
Conference opener is next Saturday, March 29, at Rhode Island
College (12:00 p.m.)
