NEW LONDON, N.H. - Colby-Sawyer
College scored five runs in the fifth inning Thursday afternoon and
held on for a 7-5 win over Plymouth State University in
non-conference baseball action at Kelsey Field. The win also gave
Colby-Sawyer head coach Jim Broughton No. 200 for his career.
The Chargers and Panthers were in a scoreless deadlock for the
first three innings, as neither team could spark much offense off
starters Vinny Vilardi (Boxford, Mass.) or John
Andersch (Concord, N.H.). Colby-Sawyer broke the game open
with five runs in the bottom of the fourth; Shane Hoagboon
(Mayfield, N.Y.) came home on a passed ball to start the scoring
and Matt Corvo (Stratton Mt., Vt.) added a bases-loaded, two-run
single. Chris Gaeta (Lynn, Mass.) contributed a double that plated
two more runs.
The Chargers added one more run in the bottom of the fifth, when
Andrew Wadleigh (Sharon, Mass.) drove in Chris Hartery (Billerica,
Mass.) to give the Chargers the 6-0 advantage.
The Panthers mounted a comeback in the top of the eighth, as they
scored five runs thanks to a Steve Picco
(Marshfield, Mass.) two-out double that drove in two runs, and two
more came home on errors by the Chargers, to get the Panthers to
within striking range. PSU had the bases loaded with the tying and
go-ahead runs in scoring position, but Colby-Sawyer's Kris Ramsay
(Gardiner, Maine) came on and shut the door on the Panthers,
pitching 1.1 innings, allowing no runs to pick up the save while
Chris Baker (Essex Jct., Vt.) recorded the win.
PSU, 6-18, finally plays its home opener this Saturday, hosting a
Little East Conference doubleheader against the University of
Southern Maine at Panther Park (12:00 p.m.) Colby-Sawyer,
9-17, returns to action Saturday when it hosts Curry College, the
nation's No. 7 ranked offense, in a Commonwealth Coast Conference
double-header.
