PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Junior
Kevin Levandowski (Derry, N.H.) hit a three-run,
walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning of game two
Sunday afternoon to lead the Plymouth State University baseball
team to a 5-2 victory over Norwich University and a sweep of the
non-conference doubleheader at Panther Park.
The
Panthers captured the first game of the twinbill with a 6-5
verdict. PSU concludes a 6-2 week that improved its overall
record to 12-22, while Norwich, playing for the first time in eight
days, dropped to 4-22.
Most of the scoring in the opener was done in the first three
innings, as the game was tied 5-5 after three. PSU pulled
ahead 6-5 in the bottom of the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by
senior Brandon Hodge (Bradford, Vt.), which ended
up being the game-winning run.
Levandowski went 4-for-4 for PSU in the opener with four singles,
three stolen bases and two runs scored. Hodge finished with
two hits and three RBI, contributing run-scoring singles in the
first and third innings. Freshman pitcher Seth
Labossiere (Lincoln, R.I.) improved his record to 3-1 with
the complete-game effort for PSU, blanking the Cadets over the last
four innings and finishing with six strikeouts.
Freshman Brett Manning (Island Pond, Vt.) and sophomore Dominic
Sorrentino (Wakefield, Mass.) had two hits and scored two runs each
for Norwich. Freshman Emilio Martinez (Brunswick, Maine) also
contributed a two-run single in the second inning rally.
Norwich took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap. After
loading the bases with no outs, sophomore David Wygonski (Vernon
Hills, Ill.) delivered an RBI single and another run came home on a
PSU infield error. PSU got the two runs back in the third
inning on Hodge's team-leading seventh home run of the season, a
line drive over the right-field fence.
It
stayed 2-2 until the last of the seventh, when junior Josh
Roberti (Cranston, R.I.) blooped a double to right,
classmate Marc McGinnis (Hanover, Mass.) walked,
and Levandowski ended it with his fourth home run of the season.
Senior Ryan Lavelle (Middleboro, Mass.) picked up
the win in relief for PSU, improving his record to 3-2. He came on
in the seventh inning in relief of freshman Mike
Moody (Manchester, N.H./Central), who allowed just two
runs (one earned) in six-and-two-thirds innings.
Wygonski had two hits in the nightcap to lead the Cadets.
Senior Jason Nickerson (Bethel, Vt.) pitched well but
suffered the loss with a complete-game effort.
Both teams are back in action on Thursday with non-conference
doubleheaders, PSU visiting New England College and Norwich hosting
Lyndon State.
