MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - The Middlebury College baseball team defeated
Plymouth State University for the second straight season in the
team's home-opener, as the host Panthers picked up a 6-3 victory
over the visiting Panthers Wednesday afternoon at Forbes Field.
Junior Kevin Levandowski (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton)
continued his hot hitting for Plymouth State with a pair of hits
and an RBI in five trips to the plate. Levandowski extended
his hitting streak to 15 games, and now has at least two hits in
five straight games (13-for-23 in that span). Freshman Matt
Koban (Bradford, N.H.) also reached base in all five plate
appearances for PSU with four walks and a base hit.
Plymouth State took a 1-0 lead in the second on a solo homer to
left by senior John Pogorzelski (Hillsborough,
N.J.), his first of the season. Middlebury took a 2-1
advantage in the bottom of the inning on an RBI ground out by
seniors Nick Lefeber (Branford, Conn.) and an RBI single to right
by Gabe Broughton (Barrington, Ill.)
Levandowski singled in freshman Grant Livington
(Niantic, Conn.) to tie the game at two in the top of the third
inning.
Middlebury opened the game up a bit in the fourth, with four runs
on a just a pair of hits. Broughton had a two-run single to spark
the inning, plating junior Andrew Matson (Coventry, R.I.) and
sophomore Erich Enns (Lansdale, Pa.).
PSU added a run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Pogorzelski,
but it wasn't enough as senior Jack Britton (Carmel, Calif.) earned
the save with two innings of scoreless work. Junior Steve Shortle
(Rutland, Vt.) picked up the win, allowing two runs over four
innings. Senior John Lanahan (Jacksonville, Fla.) had a 3-for-4 day
with a double and triple, Broughton ended the game 2-5 with three
RBI, while freshman Donald McKillop (Poway, Calif.) had a pair of
hits for the winners.
Freshman John Andersch (Concord, N.H.) started and
worked three-plus innings on the mound for PSU, suffering the loss
(1-3). Seniors Ryan Lavelle (Middleboro,
Mass.) and Justin Flanagan (Hingham, Mass.)
combined to throw five innings of scoreless relief, Lavelle going
three innings and Flanagan the last two, each giving up only two
hits and a walk.
Middlebury returns to action on Thursday at St. Michael's, while
Plymouth State plays Rivier College in a neutral site in Belmont,
Massachusetts (3:30 p.m.)
