PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Junior Collin Henry (Penobscot, Maine)
and senior Ryan Gaffney (Salem, N.H.) collected four hits apiece
and combined to knock in eight runs Friday afternoon as the
University of Southern Maine completed the season sweep of Plymouth
State University with a 24-6 victory in a Little East Conference
baseball game at Panther Park.
Henry cracked two doubles and his second home run of the year and
drove in five while Gaffney brought home three runs with four
singles. They led a 24-hit attack by the Huskies, which
included a four-run first inning and a 10-run second inning to put
the game out of reach early. USM, ranked #5 in the nation in
Division III, won its 12th straight game to improve to
24-3 overall and 6-1 in the Little East.
The
Huskies also got three hits apiece from junior Josh Mackey
(Danvers, Mass.) and sophomore Jordan Berthiaume (Berlin, Conn.),
and two hits each from sophomore Mike Eaton (Sabattus, Maine) and
seniors Chris Burleson (Portland, Maine) and Ryan Pike (Saco,
Maine).
USM
freshman hurler Josh Jillson (Wales, Maine) went seven innings to
record his first collegiate victory (1-1), allowing five runs
(three earned) on four hits and five walks while fanning three.
Highlights for the Panthers included a three-run home run by senior
Marc McGinnis (Hanover, Mass.), his second of the
season, and a solo home run by sophomore Matt
Koban (Bradford, N.H.), the first of his career.
Plymouth State, 9-15 overall and 1-6 in the LEC, continues its
seven-game home stand Saturday with a 12:00 conference doubleheader
against Rhode Island College. Southern Maine returns home to
host the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Saturday in an LEC
twinbill (12:00 p.m.)
