PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Rhode Island College scored 23 runs on 29
hits Saturday afternoon en route to sweeping a Little East
Conference baseball doubleheader from Plymouth State University,
13-7 and 10-2, at Panther Park.
The
Anchormen plated 13 runs on 15 hits to take the opener.
Junior Tim Schabowski (Pascoag, R.I.) led the team with four hits,
including a double, while the top three hitters in the RIC order
had three hits apiece. Junior Jared Rossi (Johnston, R.I.)
cracked a double and a home run and drove in three, senior B.J.
Doyon (Douglas, Mass.) added a double and two RBI, and sophomore
Gary Levesque (East Providence, R.I.) contributed two doubles and
two runs batted in.
Senior Bobby Fournier (Dartmouth, Mass.) registered the victory for
the Anchormen, improving to 3-1 with six-and-a-third innings or
work.
RIC
scored five runs in the second inning, but PSU came back with three
runs in the third. The Anchormen took the lead for good with
four runs in the fourth inning and solo runs in the fifth and
sixth.
Senior Jay Kleponis (Reading, Mass.) led the home
team with three hits and three RBI. Classmate Marc
McGinnis (Hanover, Mass.) added two hits, including an RBI
double, and freshman Mike Cappiello (Westfield,
N.J.) contributed a two-run double.
Senior Josh Cardoso (Dartmouth, Mass.) led the Anchormen in the
nightcap with four hits and three RBI, including a run-scoring
double. Doyon, freshman Kyle Allaire (Uxbridge, Mass.) and
sophomore Justin Corso (Cranston, R.I.) contributed two hits
apiece, with Allaire collected a pair of RBI doubles.
Junior Paul Vatter (Warwick, R.I.) allowed just two runs over six
innings for RIC while striking out nine, improving his record to
3-2. Junior Eric Gelsomino (Johnston, R.I.) and freshman Cory
Madore (Carver, Mass.) combined to pitch three scoreless innings of
relief.
Cappiello had three hits in the nightcap for PSU, including a pair
of doubles. Senior Jim VanGyzen (Glocester,
R.I.) added a pair of singles and McGinnis had two hits, including
a triple.
PSU
(9-17, 1-8 LEC) continues its seven-game home stand Sunday at
Panther Park with a non-conference doubleheader against Southern
Vermont College (12 noon). RIC (21-10, 5-6 LEC) returns home
to host Elms College in a non-conference affair Tuesday at 4:00
p.m.
