LYNDON CENTER, Vt. - Lyndon State College jumped
out to a 5-0 lead after one inning of play and coasted to an 11-4
victory over Plymouth State University in the opening game of a
non-conference baseball doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Skip
Pound Field.
The Panthers returned the favor in the nightcap, scoring four
first-inning runs en route to a 6-2 win and a split of the twin
bill. PSU completed the day with a 13-18 overall record,
while LSC is now 5-23-1.
Freshman Stetson Hicks (Whitefield, N.H.) and junior Josh Fletcher
(Richford, N.H.) collected three hits and three runs-batted-in each
to lead the Hornets to their fifth victory of the season in the
opener.
Freshmen Zach Maerder (Woodsville, N.H.), Shawn Lonardelli
(Lebanon, Conn.) and Michael Johnson (Lyndonville, Vt.)
chipped in two hits each in support of winning pitcher Jesse
Ballard (Albrgh, Vt.). He went five innings allowing two earned
runs on six hits while striking out none and walking four. Freshman
Sam Matthews (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) mopped up for Lyndon, pitching
two scoreless innings.
Senior Jim VanGyzen (Glocester, R.I.) and
sophomore Dan Eagan (Norwich, Conn.) had two hits
each for Plymouth State and senior Chris Welch
(South Burlington, Vt.) took the loss in his first start of the
season.
Sophomore Bryant Lausberg (Somersworth, N.H.) and
freshman Mike Cappiello (Westfield, N.J.) had
three hits each for PSU in the nightcap; Lausberg had three doubles
and drove in two, and junior Garrett Brewer
(Rutland, Vt.) knocked in a pair of runs as well to give PSU a
split of the doubleheader. Sophomore Mike Moody
(Manchester, N.H./Central) tossed four strong innings to get the
win in his first start of the season, giving up only two earned
runs on three hits and four walks while fanning seven.
Hicks drove in both runs for LSC with a first-inning single, but
the Hornets managed only four hits the rest of the game.
PSU returns home to host Rivier College in a make-up game on
Wednesday (4:00 p.m.) LSC hosts Plattsburgh State (N.Y.) in
non-conference action Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
