PLYMOUTH, N.H. - The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth
scored 28 runs on 39 hits Saturday afternoon en route to sweeping a
Little East Conference baseball doubleheader from Plymouth State
University, 7-1 and 21-11, at Panther Park.
The
two wins give UMD a 5-7 mark in the LEC and 9-23 overall, while PSU
suffered its 10th straight conference setback and fell
to 1-11 in the Little East and 14-21 overall.
Senior Dave McGuire (Plainville, Mass.) had two hits and drove in
four runs to lead the Corsairs in the opener, three coming home on
his first home run of the season. Freshman Dan DeMello
(Taunton, Mass.), sophomore Matt Ryan (Uxbridge, Mass.) and junior
Tom LaDore (Milford, Conn.) also collected three hits apiece to
pace an 18-hit Corsair attack.
Sophomore Shane Campbell (Marlboro, Mass.) recorded the victory for
UMD with a complete-game effort, scattering eight hits and three
walks while striking out four and improving to 2-4.
Sophomore Grant Livingston (Niantic, Conn.) had
three singles to lead the Panthers in the opener, and junior
Steve Picco (Marshfield, Mass.) knocked in the
only run with a second-inning single.
It
was a 3-1 game though six innings when UMD tallied three unearned
runs with two outs in the seventh to solidify the win.
Sophomore Jeff Macchi (Franklin, Mass.) went 6-for-6 with a double
and four runs batted in to lead the Corsairs in the nightcap.
Classmate Pete Beksha (Franklin, Mass.) contributed four hits,
including a three-run home run in the seventh inning, while
sophomore Ryan McDermott (Pembroke, Mass.) was 3-for-4 with two
doubles and three runs batted in. McGuire also contributed
three hits and four runs scored.
Freshman Mike Cappiello
(Westfield, N.J.) led the Panthers in the nightcap with a triple,
home run and three RBIs. Five others had two hits each in a
13-hit Panther attack, with senior Jim VanGyzen
(Glocester, R.I.) and sophomore Bryant Lausberg
(Somersworth, N.H.) driving in two runs each.
PSU
held an 8-6 lead after four innings but the Corsairs came back with
seven runs in both the fifth and seventh innings. UMD hit
three home runs in the seventh inning, one each by Ryan, Beksha and
senior Casey Askeland (Dartmouth, Mass.).
Both teams play LEC make-up doubleheaders on Sunday, PSU visiting
the University of Massachusetts Boston and UMD hosting Western
Connecticut State University.
