            BOSTON, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts Boston baseball team put up a dozen runs in both ends of the Little East Conference baseball doubleheader Sunday, sweeping Plymouth State University. 12-8 and 12-5, at Yetten Field.

            Sophomore Dan Noonan (Westport, Mass.) went 5-for-8 with three runs batted to break the school-record for RBI with 34 to lead the Beacons. UMB improves to 16-20 overall and 8-6 in LEC play to set a school-record for conference wins and lock up the fourth seed in the league tournament, while the Panthers fall to 14-23 and 1-13.  PSU will be the number eight seed in the tourney starting on Saturday, May 2.

            Sophomore Bryant Lausberg (Somersworth, N.H.) provided the offensive highlights for the Panthers, going 5-for-9 in the doubleheader with a double, a triple and four runs scored.  He went 3-for-5 in the opener and 2-for-4 in the nightcap with both extra-base hits and an RBI.

            PSU started out strong, scoring four runs in the first inning of the opener.  Senior Marc McGinnis (Hanover, Mass.) tripled home two runs, and two more came home on a single by freshman Mike Cappiello (Westfield, N.J.) and a double by junior Steve Picco (Marshfield, Mass.).

            The Beacons came back to take the lead with five runs in the second inning and two more in the third.  PSU pulled to within 7-6 in the fifth inning, but UMB put five more on the board in the bottom half of the inning to seal the win.

            Cappiello finished with four RBI in the first game and McGinnis drove in three.  Senior Jim VanGyzen (Glocester, R.I.) reached base three times on two hits and a walk.

            UMB got on the board first in the nightcap with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third, but PSU responded and took the lead with three runs in the top of the fourth.  Lausberg led off with a double, and after two were out, McGinnis walked, Cappiello singled home a run and Picco followed with a two-run double.

            The Beacons regained the lead for good with seven runs in the bottom of the fourth.  PSU got its final two runs in the fifth when Lausberg hit an RBI triple and then scored on a single to center by senior Jay Kleponis (Reading, Mass.)

            PSU will play its final regular season home games Tuesday at Panther Park against New England College in a non-conference doubleheader (2:00 p.m.)
