PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Sophomore Bryant
Lausberg (Somersworth, N.H.) went 4-for-4 with a double,
home run and five runs batted in Tuesday afternoon to lead the
Plymouth State University baseball team to an 11-7 victory over New
England College in the opener of a non-conference doubleheader at
Panther Park.
Senior Jim VanGyzen (Glocester, R.I.) cracked a
two-run homer in the nightcap, and classmate Taylor
Ketchum (Fairhaven, Mass.) tossed a four-hitter with eight
strikeouts to lead the Panthers to a 2-1 victory and a sweep of the
twinbill. PSU improves to 16-23 this spring while the
Pilgrims complete their season with a 10-23 mark.
Lausberg hit a two-run homer to right center in the first inning of
the opener, his third on the season, and followed with an RBI
double to left center in the second and a two-run single to center
in the third. He added another single in the fifth inning for his
fourth hit of the game. Freshman Mike
Cappiello (Westfield, N.J.) also hit a home run in
the sixth inning, his third of the year, and sophomore
Anthony Vadala (Medford, Mass.) scored four runs
after reaching base on all four plate appearances with two hits, a
walk and a hit-by-pitch.
PSU
scored three runs in the first and two in the second to take a 5-1
lead. The Pilgrims came back with three in the top of the
third to pull to within a run, but the Panthers pulled away with
three in the bottom of the third, one in the fourth and two in the
sixth. Freshman Joe Hudson (Greenfield, Mass.)
recorded the win on the mound for PSU (3-2) with a complete-game
effort, striking out seven.
Senior Joe Clark (Newcastle, Maine) and sophomore Jimmy Lauzon
(Manchester, N.H./West) led the Pilgrims with three hits and an RBI
each in the first game. Junior Scott Miller (Mt. Airy, Md.)
knocked in three with a pair of singles, and freshman Lucas Burgess
(Bath, N.H.) had two hits and an RBI.
Ketchum and freshman Taylor Vesey (Goffstown, N.H.) were locked in
a scoreless dual in the nightcap when senior Jay
Kleponis (Reading, Mass.) led off the fourth inning for
PSU with a single and VanGyzen delivered his team-leading fifth
home run of the season, one of his three hits in the game.
Ketchum did the rest, limiting the Pilgrims to one run on four hits
and two walks.
NEC
plated its only run in the top of the fifth when Burgess singled,
stole second and came home on a double by Lauzon. That was
all the offense the Pilgrims could muster, as Vesey was a
tough-luck loser despite allowing just two runs on six hits and a
walk while fanning five.
PSU
wraps up the regular season Wednesday with a non-conference game at
Becker (3:30 p.m.)
