WORCESTER, Mass. - Freshman Mike
Cappiello (Westfield, N.J.) had five hits and drove in
seven runs Wednesday afternoon to lead Plymouth State University to
a 17-10 victory over Becker College in a non-conference baseball
game at WPI's Class of 1893 Field.
Cappiello smacked three doubles and hit his fourth home run of the
season to lead a 16-hit attack for PSU. Four of his teammates
had two hits apiece, including sophomore Matt
Koban (Bradford, N.H./Kearsarge), who had a double, a
single, two walks, a stolen base and three runs batted in.
PSU wraps up the regular season at 17-23 overall, while Becker is
now 14-14-1.
Plymouth State scored at least one run in seven of the nine
innings. After scoring single runs in the first two
frames, PSU put up four runs in the third, five in the fifth
and two in the sixth to take a 13-2 lead. Becker scored six
times in the bottom of the eighth inning to pull to within four
runs (14-10), but the Panthers added three insurance runs in the
top of the ninth.
Seniors Marc McGinnis (Hanover, Mass.) and
Jay Kleponis (Reading, Mass.) and junior
Steve Picco (Marshfield, Mass.) joined in the hit
parade for PSU with two hits apiece,
Sophomore Bryant Lausberg (Somersworth, N.H.) was
the starting and winning pitcher for PSU, working seven innings and
allowing just two earned runs on seven hits and no walks while
striking out three. Seniors Chris Welch
(South Burlington, Vt.) and Nick Englert (North
Woodstock, N.H.) eached pitched a scoreless inning of relief.
Senior Geoff Sinnott (Coventry, R.I.) led the Hawks with three hits
and four RBIs, including a home run. Junior Jim Ceglarek (Chicago,
Ill.) also had three hits, including a pair of doubles.
PSU is the eighth seed in the upcoming Little East Conference
Tournament, and will travel to top-seeded University of Southern
Maine this weekend for a best-of-3 series. A doubleheader on
Saturday begins at 12 noon, with Sunday's game, if necessary, at
1:00 p.m.
Becker's next game is Friday against Elms College in a game at
Southern Vermont College (3:00 p.m.)
