AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Trinity College
baseball team, ranked fifth in the national Division III poll,
scored 20 runs on 30 hits Tuesday afternoon en route to sweeping a
non-conference make-up doubleheader over Plymouth State University
in the Central Florida Invitational.
The Bantams, who have been to the past two Division III College
World Series, took the opener, 11-0, and won the nightcap,
9-5. Trinity is now 4-1 on the season while PSU drops to 0-6.
Plymouth State managed just one hit in the first game against
Trinity. Junior Andrew Janiga (Ellington, Conn.) blanked the
Panthers over six innings while striking out eight. Senior Kent
Graham (Longmeadow, Mass.) led the Trinity offense with a double
and a triple and classmate James Wood (Windham, N.H.)
homered. Junior Chris Bryant (Lebanon, N.H.)
started and took the loss for PSU.
The upset-minded Panthers took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of
the nightcap, and pulled ahead 4-2 in the top of the fifth, but
Trinity took the lead with three runs in the last of the fifth and
pulled away with four more runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Sophomore Bobby Chatfield (Sharon, Conn.) started
on the mound for PSU and was saddled with the loss.
After an off day on Wednesday, Plymouth State faces Bowdoin College
Thursday in a non-conference twinbill at 1:00 p.m. in Winter
Haven.
