PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Junior Bobby Doyon (Keene, N.H.)
smacked three hits, including a double and a home run, and drove in
four runs Tuesday afternoon as Keene State College defeated
Plymouth State University, 10-6, in a Little East Conference
baseball game at Panther Park.
Doyon doubled in a run in the first inning, singled home another in
the second and capped a three-run rally in the sixth inning with
his eighth home run of the season. The rally helped the Owls
regain the lead for good after PSU had battled back from a 5-0
deficit to deadlock the game at 5-5 after five innings. Keene
State went on to win to improve to 15-12-1 overall and 4-1 in the
Little East, while PSU dropped to 5-19 overall and 1-7 in
conference play.
The
Owls also got a double and a home run from junior Peter Burgio
(Bolton, Conn.) in their 13-hit attack. Keene State used six
pitchers in the game, with sophomore Kyle O'Brien
(Springfield, N.H.) picking up the win (1-0) in relief.
Junior Bryant Lausberg (Somersworth, N.H.) had
three hits and two RBI to lead PSU, including a double and his
second home run of the season. Sophomore Mike
Cappiello (Westfield, N.J.) also cracked a three-run home
run to spur the Panther comeback in the early innings.
Doyon and senior Keith Patnode (Keene, N.H.) had RBI hits in the
first inning to give the Owls an early 2-0 lead. An RBI
single by Doyon and a sacrifice fly by senior Anthony Cipolla
(Glastonbury, Conn.) made it 4-0 in the second inning, and a
run-scoring single by junior Vincent Ganz (Waterbury, Conn.) in the
third extended the margin to 5-0.
PSU
got on the board in the bottom of the third on Cappiello's
three-run homer, and tied the score in the last of the fifth on
Lausberg's two-run blast. The tie didn't last
long as Keene State took the lead for good in the top of the sixth
on an RBI double by senior Jesse Cahill (Cranston, R.I.) and
Doyon's two-run homer.
The
Panthers got one back in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly
by sophomore Joe Eramo (Shirley, Mass.), but Keene
State added insurance runs in the seventh on Burgio's solo
homer and in the ninth on an RBI single by sophomore Greg Bates
(Salem, N.H.).
KSC
earned the season sweep over PSU, coming from behind to defeat the
Panthers a week ago in Keene, 5-4.
The
Panthers will be back on the diamond on Saturday with a Little East
twinbill at the University of Southern Maine. PSU's
home game on Thursday against Lyndon State has been cancelled
because LSC has to make up a conference game. Keene State
plays a non-conference game Thursday at Fitchburg State.
